Job Description The City of New Albany is seeking qualified Firefighter applicants for positions to be filled as openings occur and are approved. There is an extensive screening process involved that will be initiated for qualified candidates as openings are approved to be filled. Screening includes mandated age requirements and limitations. Qualified applicants will be contacted as the screening process is initiated and will be required to submit required documentation to continue in the screening process. The New Albany Fire Department maintains an applicant list for those who fully qualify, and candidates are active for two years from their application date. The primary functions of a NAFD Firefighter are to protect the community from disaster situations, including house and building fires, and promote an environment of public safety within the NAFD's response area. This position also participates in fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment and quarter's maintenance, and training dealing with all phases of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, rescue, and emergency operation. This position may perform the duties of other employees in the City of New Albany Fire Department, as needed. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Please note that an "*" denotes an essential function of the job) • *Responds to emergency incidents during an assigned shift., • *Must be able to work under extremely stressful situations, day, and night, which result from a fire and other emergencies, including the responsibility for remaining calm and carrying out all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property., • *Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders., • *Assists in the care and cleaning of quarters, buildings, grounds, the fire training facility, apparatus and equipment, and reports on their condition., • *Maintains an effective work environment with coworkers through verbal and written communications., • *Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items, • *May represents the Fire Department and the City in public appearances and talks on fire suppression, fire prevention and related subjects., • *Prepares and develops reports as required., • *Participates in training activities and instruction sessions. May be required to train on off-duty days and or nights., • *Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures., • *Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions and follows departmental and City safety policies., • *May serves as a member of various employee committees., • *Maintains accurate records in all matters regarding the department., • *Must respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous materials, confined space rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench, and collapse rescues., • *May deal with social service-related areas of emergency response by assisting victims and relatives of victims of traumatic events., • *Mandatory participation in all NAFD physical fitness programs., • Demonstrate informative and professional assistance when working with vendors, co-workers, and the public., • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations., • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork., • Complete projects and/or reports in an accurate and timely manner., • Maintain City information in a confidential manner., • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and other employees., • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness., • Ability to work as a team member., • Display professional appearance, warm demeanor, and positive attitude., • Be a motivated self-starter., • Work independently and to be accurate, efficient, and organized., • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms., • The employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell., • The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 150+ pounds. Frequency depends upon fire runs., • Read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions; and to understand and apply available guidelines to varied operational requirements., • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines., • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks., • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS: • This position requires working in both an internal and external environment., • This position requires a flexible work schedule; night and/or weekends will be required. Required training may occur on off-duty hours, including nights., • This job operates in a professional office environment while at the fire stations., • This role may routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines., • While performing the duties of this job on a fire run, the employee works in outside weather conditions., • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration., • The individual may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of duties., • High school diploma or equivalent., • In accordance with Indiana Code 36-8-4-2, this position requires Indiana residence within Floyd County or a county that is contiguous to Floyd County., • Successful completion of EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and Firefighter I & II courses., • Thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment., • Working knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through state EMT certification., • Considerable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, departmental standard operating procedures, and regulations., • Must successfully pass a medical exam after job offer., • Must pass an annual physical fitness assessment and respirator testing., • Possess firefighter I and II certification, NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 Certifications and maintain EMT for the duration of the firefighter career if hired after 01/01/2001., • Meet requirements of NAFD driver/operator course after the first year., • Specialized fire fighting vehicles and equipment., • Computers, peripherals, and related software.
