Job Description Pipe Welder/Fitter Job Description This role focuses on assembling and welding 4–6 inch pipe systems for a large commercial financial building project on the east side of Austin. You will install piping in hangers and within walls using durable materials such as copper, stainless steel, cast iron, and alloys to support high-volume water, waste, and gas flow. The position requires proficiency in multiple welding processes and strong pipe fitting skills to ensure safe, accurate, and reliable installations. Responsibilities • Assemble and install 4–6 inch pipe in hangers and within walls throughout a commercial financial building., • Work with copper, stainless steel, cast iron, and alloy piping to support water, waste, and gas systems., • Perform welding using SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG) processes, depending on pipe material and application., • Fit, align, and secure pipe sections and components to meet layout, design, and blueprint specifications., • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols to determine pipe routing, dimensions, and weld requirements., • Execute welds in all positions (1G–6G) while maintaining high quality and structural integrity., • Apply metallurgy knowledge to select appropriate welding techniques, consumables, and procedures for various materials., • Use tools such as grinders, torches, and related equipment to prepare, weld, and finish joints and assemblies., • Follow rigorous safety procedures and standards while working inside and outside on an active construction site., • Inspect completed welds and pipe installations for defects, alignment, and compliance with project specifications., • Collaborate with other trades and team members to coordinate installation sequences and resolve layout challenges., • Proven experience in pipe welding and fitting for commercial building projects., • Strong pipe fitting and layout skills for 4–6 inch pipe systems., • Proficiency in SMAW (stick) welding., • Proficiency in GTAW (TIG) welding., • Experience with GMAW (MIG) welding., • Ability to weld in all positions (1G–6G) with consistent quality., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols., • Knowledge of metallurgy as it relates to welding different pipe materials., • Hands-on experience working with copper, stainless steel, cast iron, and alloy piping., • Rigorous adherence to safety practices and site safety requirements., • Ability to use grinders, torches, and related welding and cutting tools effectively., • Background in pipe and welding work for high-volume water, waste, and gas systems in commercial buildings., • Experience installing piping in hangers and within walls on new construction projects., • Comfort working both indoors and outdoors on large commercial job sites., • Strong attention to detail in fit-up, weld quality, and final installation. Work Environment This role is based on a commercial new-build construction site on the east side of Austin, involving both indoor and outdoor work on a financial building. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, typically totaling about 50 hours per week, with start times around 6:00–7:00 a.m. and end times around 4:30–5:30 p.m., depending on the day. You will work in an active construction environment using welding equipment (stick, MIG, TIG), grinders, torches, and standard pipe-fitting tools. The setting requires appropriate construction attire and personal protective equipment suitable for both interior and exterior work conditions Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Austin, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
