The role involves overseeing design quality, managing multidisciplinary inputs, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and supporting the development of engineers within the team. The Technical Manager will act as a technical authority, contributing to project success and Fairhurst’s reputation for engineering innovation and excellence. The role also has a business management and development function which will require the Technical Manager to support on development and expansion of the current client base and manage and report on the financial performance of the team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Technical Leadership & Oversight • Lead, coordinate, and review civil engineering design outputs, ensuring accuracy, technical robustness, and compliance., • Oversee feasibility studies, technical assessments, and engineering analyses across infrastructure and development projects., • Provide guidance across Fairhurst’s civil engineering disciplines, including highways, drainage, earthworks, and structural interfaces., • Ensure designs meet regulatory requirements and align with Fairhurst’s quality standards., • Strong working knowledge of MCHW, DMRB and relevant industry design standards, • Strong commercial awareness, • Manage technical inputs from internal teams (e.g., geotechnical, environmental, structures, planning, transportation)., • Work closely with project managers to ensure efficient resource allocation and timely delivery., • Conduct technical audits, risk reviews, and design checks., • Drive best practice in engineering processes, modelling, and documentation., • Mentor and develop engineering staff within your team., • Foster collaborative working and continuous professional development., • Serve as the technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies., • Degree in Civil Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent)., • Chartered status (CEng, MICE or equivalent) preferred., • Significant experience in civil engineering, including design responsibility., • Experience delivering infrastructure or development multidisciplinary projects., • Excellent communication, presentation and organisational skills., • Strong knowledge of UK design standards and regulatory frameworks., • Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills., • Management of contract budgets and financial reporting., • A collaborative, partner‑led environment with access to multidisciplinary expertise., • Career and professional development and opportunities on high‑profile projects., • Competitive salary and benefits, aligned to experience and location., • A culture built on responsiveness, flexibility, and sustainable, value‑adding engineering., • Competitive salary and excellent flexible benefits package, • Contributory pension, personal health care plan and life insurance, • 33 days annual leave (inclusive of Public Holidays) including annual leave purchase and buy-back scheme, • Bonus Schemes including loyalty bonus and qualifications award ETHOS We, at Fairhurst, know that progress within the industry is all about people. The Engineering Technician (Roads) will collaborate with Engineers and Project Managers to deliver coordinated, buildable solutions that meet client, statutory and quality requirements. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design & Drafting • Prepare conceptual and detailed designs for infrastructure, highway and energy schemes., • Develop and maintain 2D/3D models and drawing sheets in AutoCAD and Civil 3D (or similar), including surfaces, corridors, feature lines and cross‑sections., • Creation of federated 3D models to enhance coordination, collaboration, construction sequencing and innovative processes for Asset tagging. Understanding of clash detections with the aim of reducing conflicts during the construction phase, • Work in both supervised and unsupervised environments ensuring that the technical content of all work completed is correct and delivered within agreed timescales and budgets., • Working within a multidisciplinary team to contribute to design, delivery plans, drawing registers and issue records; meet programme and quality milestones., • Assist with quantities, take‑offs, preliminary cost inputs and specification notes., • Help respond to review comments from clients, authorities and contractors., • Mentor and develop engineering staff within your team., • Foster collaborative working and continuous professional development., • Work closely with Engineers, Technicians and Graduates to deliver coordinated outputs., • Apply internal QA procedures, drawing standards, BIM/CDE protocols and file management best practice., • Share good practice, contribute to lessons learned, and support continuous improvement.
