Job Description Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 28,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer). MRNY is a newly unionized workplace. MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more." Current Opening: MRNY seeks a patient and caring Receptionist to welcome community members to the Staten Island office and provide a wide-range of administrative support to ensure the smooth functioning of MRNY’s operations. This position will work closely with the Office Manager and Administrative Team to support MRNY’s day to day operations and the various events that MRNY engages in. The Receptionist is responsible for providing secretarial, clerical and administrative support in an effective and efficient manner. The Receptionist will ensure the safety and security of the office at all times, and demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times. The schedule for this position is 20 hours per week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday from 2pm to 7pm. Occasional evenings or weekends. Key Responsibilities but not limited to: • Opening and/or closing the assigned office, • Answering phones in a cheerful and polite manner and providing internal and external referrals, • Receiving guests with a smile and treating them with respect, • Membership intake and data entry in a timely fashion, including processing membership dues and donation payments, • Photocopying, faxing, scanning documents, • Distributing and scanning mail for the Staten Island office and other locations as needed., • Keeping the reception area clean and organized, • Responsibility for general maintenance in the office, including but not limited to: replenish all supplies, coffee, ensure that all flyers/ brochures up in the office are up to date and in good condition, • Read and respond to emails in a timely manner, • Provide general information about the organization to visitors and callers and fill out membership forms for new members., • Assist staff and members with administrative tasks (copying, faxing, mailings, ordering food) including providing administrative support for specific departmental projects or clinics as needed, • Provide administrative support for special events as needed, • Help think through and enforce administrative procedures and protocols, • Attend department meetings and staff events, • Rotate within Make the Road NY front desks when needed, • Help keep track of and maintain MRNY equipment and materials, • Track the inventory additions / subtraction in relevant databases of office supplies, and metro cards, • Keep track and information on daily wrap ups, • Tracking the metro cards subtractions forms for all the sites, • Support weekend and evening events as noted below, • Eligible to work in the U.S, • High School Diploma, • Preferably, at least 2 years previous experience working in an office setting or a strong background in customer service, • Committed to Make the Road New York’s mission, • Possess a commitment to collective action and community organizing., • Bilingual English/Spanish is mandatory., • Work well under pressure, • Be fast learner and a people person, • Strong interpersonal skills like empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and effective communication., • Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, Publish, etc. and databases such as Salesforce, • Must be efficient, communicative, a team player, • Must be organized, • Adaptability with technology, • Trustworthy/Confidential, • Teachable and Innovative MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days.
