Job DescriptionJob Title: Lab Technician Job Description The Lab Technician supports day-to-day laboratory operations by maintaining laboratory areas, equipment, instruments, and supplies, and by performing routine and specialized testing in accordance with quality assurance programs and standard operating procedures. This role uses established laboratory methods, techniques, and instrumentation to perform microbial food testing and accurately document results. Responsibilities • Retrieve samples from sample control and prepare them for analysis according to established procedures., • Perform microbial food testing, including aseptic testing for organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Bacillus cereus, and other relevant microorganisms., • Carry out sample preparation activities, including aliquoting samples, spiking and tracing samples, preparing reagents, bottling samples, preparing concentrations, performing separation and sonication, and setting up liquid racks., • Ensure all samples are properly labeled and resolve discrepancies or anomalies in sample identification or documentation., • Record analysis results accurately and completely, and maintain clear, organized bench sheets and laboratory logbooks., • Track samples throughout the testing process to ensure proper handling, chain of custody, and timely completion of analyses., • Perform routine cleaning and washing of laboratory glassware to ensure readiness for the next day’s samples., • Monitor and restock laboratory supplies to support continuous and efficient laboratory operations., • Follow all quality assurance and quality control procedures to maintain the integrity and reliability of test results., • Use laboratory testing instruments and computer systems to conduct tests and enter data accurately and efficiently., • Work both independently and collaboratively to manage assigned tasks and meet testing timelines., • Verbal and written communication skills to document results clearly and interact effectively with team members., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, testing, documentation, and sample tracking., • Basic ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment., • Basic knowledge of laboratory testing information, methods, and techniques, particularly within microbiology or analytical testing., • Basic ability to analyze data and accurately document and record results in laboratory systems and logbooks., • Computer skills for data entry, documentation, and use of laboratory software and systems., • Experience or familiarity with laboratory testing instruments and equipment., • 0–2 years of lab-based testing experience preferred, including academic or professional laboratory experience., • Ability to remain on one’s feet for the majority of the shift while performing laboratory tasks., • Experience with sample preparation techniques such as aliquoting, spiking, preparing reagents, and preparing concentrations., • Background or coursework in chemistry, analytical chemistry, or microbiology., • Familiarity with good manufacturing practices (GMP) and quality assurance principles., • Experience with quality control processes in a laboratory setting., • Skill in pipetting, titration, and aseptic technique., • Experience with data entry and maintaining accurate laboratory records., • Interest in professional growth, cross-training, and learning additional laboratory methods and departments. This role operates in a microbiology food testing laboratory that focuses on third-party testing and analytical services. The environment involves working with microbial cultures and food samples using standard microbiology and analytical chemistry techniques. Lab Technicians typically spend most of their shift on their feet performing hands-on testing, sample preparation, and equipment handling. The laboratory follows structured quality assurance and quality control procedures, and uses a range of testing instruments, pipettes, glassware, and computer systems for data entry and reporting.
