Job Description Distribution Designer Job Description The Distribution Designer performs detailed design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems, preparing field notes, drawings, specifications, and design estimates. The role requires strong analytical skills to collaborate effectively with engineers and experienced distribution system designers, while developing a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), utility construction standards, and industry best practices. This position also supports field technical services, data collection, and documentation to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective electric distribution projects. Responsibilities • Perform detailed design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems, including the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and design estimates., • Acquire and apply a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), national engineering standards, utility construction standards, and best industry engineering practices., • Develop broad knowledge of engineering disciplines as they relate to design and constructability, construction methods and materials, and the economics of electric distribution projects., • Maintain production and quality of assigned projects by organizing and managing field data, photographs, engineering analysis, reports, and departmental databases in accordance with departmental guidelines., • Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, graphs, and complete construction drawing packages., • Perform field technical services for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, including system inventories and audits, joint use management and permitting, pad-mount inspections, ground-line pole inspections, metering and apparatus services, and lighting audits., • Collect field data using a laptop, tablet, GPS, and other electronic devices, and input the collected information into database software accurately and efficiently., • Develop a working knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communication facilities associated with electric distribution systems., • Operate necessary field equipment to take measurements on utility poles and mid-span facilities, perform pole inspections, and inspect and perform maintenance on pad-mounted equipment., • Perform visual inspection of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities and equipment, compile field data, prepare minor work orders, and generate maintenance reports for distribution equipment., • Provide assistance with storm damage assessments for overhead and underground distribution structures and equipment in various geographic areas as needed., • Draft and update technical drawings and documentation related to distribution design and field work., • Present ideas effectively in both formal and informal settings, clearly communicating technical information to internal teams and external stakeholders., • Communicate clearly in writing and by phone, using professional and ethical standards in all email and telephone communications., • Keep supervisors and coworkers informed by sharing complete and accurate information, fostering effective collaboration across the organization., • Associate’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering., • Entry-level knowledge of electric distribution design principles., • Clear and valid driver’s license., • Ability to perform detailed design work for overhead and underground electric distribution systems., • Ability to prepare and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and design estimates., • Ability to perform visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities and equipment., • Ability to compile and organize field data and prepare minor work orders and maintenance reports., • Ability to use laptop computers, tablet devices, GPS units, and other electronic devices for field data collection., • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with engineers, designers, clients, and agencies., • Ability to present ideas clearly in formal and informal situations., • Ability to maintain accurate project documentation, including field data, photographs, engineering analysis, and reports., • 1+ years of electric utility or telecommunications field experience preferred., • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) preferred., • Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications desired., • Experience with AutoCAD or similar computer-aided design programs preferred., • Proficient use of engineering software preferred., • Experience with drafting electrical and roadway drawings is beneficial., • Understanding of telephone, cable, and other communication facilities associated with distribution systems is advantageous., • Ability to assist with storm damage assessments for overhead and underground distribution structures and equipment. This role involves a combination of office and field work. In the office, you will use computers, engineering software, and design tools to prepare drawings, reports, and construction packages. In the field, you will travel to various sites to perform inspections, collect data, operate measurement equipment on utility poles and mid-span facilities, and inspect pad-mounted equipment and other distribution assets. The position may require assistance with storm damage assessments, which can involve work in varying weather and environmental conditions. A flexible schedule is available, including the option to work four 10-hour days from Monday through Thursday, subject to business needs. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Nashville, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
