Job Description Job Title: Technician Job Description The Technician supports engine and vehicle development and testing activities with a strong focus on test vehicle fleets, engine and after-treatment systems, and calibration support. This role combines hands-on mechanical work, electrical and instrumentation tasks, and coordination of prototype procurement to ensure efficient and reliable powertrain testing in lab, test cell, and vehicle environments. Responsibilities • Provide comprehensive support for the test vehicle fleet, including software and hardware updates, routine and corrective maintenance, safety inspections, and installation or removal of test instrumentation., • Coordinate the build, preparation, instrumentation installation, and maintenance of single-cylinder and multi-cylinder engines and after-treatment systems for development and validation testing., • Collaborate closely with engineers and designers to complete designs, finalize detailed prints, and order prototypes for engine, electrical, and after-treatment subsystems used in powertrain system testing in test cells and in vehicles., • Manage all aspects of the prototype procurement process, including creating bills of materials, pulling part numbers, preparing and providing documentation for purchasing, supporting prototype suppliers, and coordinating receiving, invoicing, and storage of parts., • Coordinate the test vehicle fleet for various programs, including procurement, transfer, and bailment activities to support supplier-led testing and internal test plans., • Diagnose issues on prototype test vehicles, engines, after-treatment systems, and prototype parts, recommend and implement fixes, and direct rework or updates to minimize downtime and test delays., • Create custom wiring harnesses when needed to support new hardware, instrumentation, and test configurations., • Review engine and vehicle test data to verify proper functioning of new designs and hardware and identify potential issues or anomalies., • Perform data collection using calibration tools and execute focused test plans to support engine and after-treatment calibration and development., • Handle catalyst aging activities, including submitting catalyst aging requests, tracking their status, and ensuring timely availability of aged components for testing., • Support travel and work overtime when required to meet testing schedules and project deadlines., • High school diploma or GED., • Approximately 3 years of experience in engine and vehicle development and testing., • Experience with engine testing in a development or product engineering environment., • Valid driver’s license., • Personal computer skills, including the ability to use online systems and standard office software such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint., • Basic automotive mechanical capability, including familiarity with powertrain, electrical, and vehicle systems., • Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues on engines, after-treatment systems, and vehicles and support corrective actions., • Associate degree in a technical field is preferred., • Approximately 3 years of experience using calibration tools such as ATI, ETAS, PTDIAG, or similar systems., • Experience with diesel engines; diesel engine experience is preferred., • Experience with engine and after-treatment build processes, including assembly, instrumentation, and preparation for test cell operation., • Experience with test cell setup and problem solving for engine and powertrain testing., • Experience with engine calibration testing is preferred., • engineering or product development environments is beneficial., • Ability to create custom wiring harnesses and support electrical integration for test setups., • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work effectively as part of a team. This role operates primarily in a lab and test cell environment focused on engine, after-treatment, and powertrain system testing. The Technician works around running engines, test vehicles, and associated test equipment, including calibration tools such as ATI, ETAS, and PTDIAG, as well as standard computer systems and office software. Work involves hands-on mechanical and electrical tasks, instrumentation installation, and data collection in controlled test facilities and occasionally in vehicle settings. Hours may vary based on test schedules, and overtime and travel may be required to support critical testing activities. Appropriate personal protective equipment is used in the lab and test cell environment, and work is performed in a professional engineering and product development setting that emphasizes safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Dearborn, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.63 - $39.19/hr.
