We are now recruiting for an experienced Engineering Technical Manager to provide authoritative technical leadership across both Infrastructure and Rolling Stock systems on the West Midlands Metro network. This is a senior engineering role reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, acting as the recognised technical deputy and providing clear technical direction across the engineering function. The role requires a strong leadership approach, ownership of technical improvement, and the ability to drive change across a complex operational environment. The successful candidate will ideally come from a light rail, rail, infrastructure or complex asset background, with a proven track record of operating at a senior technical level. They will lead and coordinate a central technical function made up of technical leads, technicians and engineers, ensuring that outputs across the business are technically robust, risk-informed, consistent and aligned with long-term asset management principles. This role is accountable for ensuring engineering decisions, standards, fault resolution, asset strategies and project integration are technically sound and aligned with ISO 55001 principles. Acting as the recognised technical authority, you will play a critical role in supporting the safety, reliability and long-term performance of the Metro network. As our Engineering Technical Manager, you will be responsible for: Acting as a technical authority across all engineering disciplines, ensuring consistent, compliant and risk-informed engineering decisions. Providing leadership and coordination to the central technical team, including technical leads, technicians and engineers. Driving technical improvement, engineering change and continuous improvement across infrastructure, rolling stock and wider engineering activities. Leading investigation and resolution of complex, recurring and system-level faults using structured root cause analysis. Developing, maintaining and governing engineering standards, specifications and lifecycle strategies aligned to ISO 55001 principles. Providing technical assurance across maintenance, projects and contractor activities, including RAMS, methodologies and engineering proposals. Supporting production teams with technical direction while enabling long-term capability through knowledge transfer. Providing technical input to procurement, ensuring engineering requirements are clearly and appropriately defined. Supporting asset lifecycle planning, renewal strategies and engineering justification for investment decisions. Supporting capital projects through design reviews, constructability input and system integration assurance. Leading engineering change control, ensuring risks and impacts are assessed, approved and documented. Analysing fault trends and performance data to drive reliability and preventative engineering improvements. Acting as the technical interface with stakeholders, contractors, suppliers and OEMs, supporting negotiations and resolution of technical issues. Maintaining engineering documentation, standards libraries and auditable decision records. Providing functional leadership to technical specialists and supporting professional development across the technical function. Participating in on-call manager arrangements as required. In order to be successful in this role, you must have / be: Extensive experience in engineering roles within light rail, rail, infrastructure or complex asset environments. Proven experience operating at a senior technical level. Proven technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering systems. Strong experience in fault investigation, root cause analysis and reliability engineering. Strong understanding of asset lifecycle management and ISO 55001 principles. Experience developing engineering standards and technical specifications. Engineering Degree. Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, or working towards. IOSH or NEBOSH qualification. Excellent technical communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels. Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capability. High standards of technical integrity, governance and professional judgement. Able to operate effectively at both strategic and operational levels. A visible leadership approach with the ability to drive change, improvement and technical ownership. Proactive, resilient and solution-focused. Full UK driving licence. Why Join MML?
