Job DescriptionJob Title: Commercial / Institutional Electrician (Campus Environment) Job Description This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and installing electrical systems and equipment across a college campus environment, primarily working with 480V and below. The electrician ensures safe, reliable power distribution and supports both older infrastructure and modern building systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical codes. Responsibilities • Perform all phases of electrical maintenance, repair, and installation for building electrical equipment and systems across the campus., • Work primarily with electrical systems rated at 480V and below, including low-voltage and high-voltage components within that range., • Use a multimeter and other diagnostic tools to perform electrical troubleshooting and testing on a wide variety of electrical components., • Install, maintain, and repair electrical facilities and related equipment in accordance with NEC and local electrical codes., • Carry out preventive and predictive maintenance, including inspections, cleaning, adjustments, and performance testing of electrical equipment to minimize downtime., • Install, bend, and run conduit; pull wire and cable; and complete electrical wiring tasks for new installations and modifications., • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including switchgear, building automation and controls, lighting controls, fire alarm systems, and access control and security systems., • Support installation, troubleshooting, and corrective repair of high-voltage equipment within the campus distribution system., • Work with work order (WO) systems, including dispatching, receiving, recording, and closing work orders, following all operating procedures for routine and emergency assignments., • Receive and execute work assignments from electronic work orders, verbal instructions, or written directions, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and on time., • Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to plan and execute installations and repairs., • Apply knowledge of substation components, safety procedures, and switching operations to help maintain power distribution reliability., • Ensure all equipment and systems are maintained in a safe manner, following established safety procedures and best practices., • Collaborate with campus facilities and other trades as needed to support campus operations and building systems.Essential Skills, • At least 5+ years of commercial or institutional electrical experience, preferably in large buildings or campus environments., • Strong proficiency with electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics on low and high voltage systems from approximately 24V to 480V., • Hands-on experience with 480V electrical systems and related distribution equipment., • Proficient in the use of a multimeter and other electrical diagnostic testing tools., • Ability to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical codes., • Demonstrated experience with conduit installation, including conduit bending, running conduit, and pulling wire and cable., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical drawings., • Experience with preventive and predictive maintenance of electrical equipment and systems., • Knowledge of substation components, electrical safety procedures, and switching operations., • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), fire alarm systems, emergency generators and backup power, access control and security systems, and lighting control systems., • High school diploma or GED.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience working in a college or campus environment, comfortable with large buildings, older infrastructure, and modern systems., • Completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship program (typically 4–5 years) is strongly preferred., • Knowledge of switchgear operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting., • Experience with building automation and controls, including integration with electrical systems., • Strong understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for campus-wide electrical systems., • Ability to work effectively with a computerized work order system for dispatching, tracking, and documenting work., • Strong commitment to electrical safety and adherence to established safety procedures., • Effective communication skills to understand verbal and written instructions and coordinate with facilities teams.Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based on a college campus that operates much like a small city, with a mix of older buildings and modern facilities. You will work on a variety of systems, including 480V distribution, low-voltage controls, building automation systems, fire alarms, emergency generators, access control and security systems, and lighting controls. The position involves hands-on work in mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, utility spaces, and occupied campus buildings, requiring adherence to campus safety and operational procedures. Work is typically performed using standard electrical tools and test equipment, including multimeters and diagnostic instruments, and is coordinated through an electronic work order system for both routine and emergency tasks. The environment may require working in tight spaces, at heights, or outdoors as needed to support campus operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Louis, MO. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
