Position Overview Miller Farm serves as Earlham College’s campus farm and a hub of collaboration and experimentation around food and sustainability. Operations include ~1 acre of production gardens (USDA Certified Organic + Real Organic Project certified), a high tunnel, two caterpillar tunnels, composting, native pollinator gardens, and a community garden. Additional resources include the use of space within the Hill Memorial Greenhouse for seed starting and propagation. Produce is primarily offered for sale at the local farmers’ market, providing a vital link between Earlham College and the Richmond community. The Farm Manager leads these operations, provides supervision to student employees, provides support for on-farm events, and offers courses in sustainable agriculture. The Farm Manager is supervised by the Director of the Center for Environmental Leadership and will work in collaboration with other staff within the Center, including the Director of Outdoor Education, and various other faculty and staff also involved with projects at Miller Farm. Primary Duties & Responsibilities • Farm operations (60%), • Work with students to plan and manage sustainable agriculture systems at Miller Farm, including composting, • Supervise summer interns and student workers during the school year, • Create and maintain best practices-based safety protocols for all tools and equipment associated with the program and food handling, • Train students in proper equipment use and maintenance, • Teaching/Outreach (20%), • Lead 1-credit courses focused on sustainable agriculture each semester, • Promote use of the farm in courses across the curriculum, • Work with Richmond community to encourage involvement with Earlham students at Miller Farm (for example: community gardens, summer programs, educational workshops), • Planning/Administration (20%), • Maintain USDA Organic certification through OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association), including record keeping and yearly inspection, • Establish a vision and plan for the next 5-10 years of activity at Miller Farm, • Manage budgets associated with farm operations, including sales of farm products, • High school diploma, or equivalent, required, • Bachelor’s degree or higher in agriculture or related field, preferred, • Experience growing a variety of crops using sustainable and small-scale agriculture methods, preferably in the local region, • Experience working with and maintenance of a variety of farm tools and equipment, • Ability to communicate and work with people from diverse backgrounds, • Commitment to upholding Earlham's Principles and Practices, • Experience with maintaining organic certification, preferred, • Cover letter, • Resume, • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance*, • Company paid Long-Term Disability after 1 year of full-time service*, • Basic and Voluntary Life insurance*, • Employee Assistance Program*, • Campus Store Discount, • Free ticket vouchers for Richmond Symphony Orchestra, • Wellness Center Free Membership or Discount for eligible employees, • Athletic Games-Free entry to all home games, • Free entry into most Theatre/Music shows, • Tuition Benefits for Immediate Family for eligible employees*, • 403(b) Retirement* – For eligible employees, Earlham will contribute a non-elective contribution equal to 5% of gross pay after 2 years of service.
