Job Description Summary: Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Maintains accountability for his/her own practice and participates in patient and family teaching throughout all stages of pregnancy. Collaboration with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Delegates/provides direction to other nursing personnel in the unit in accordance with their level of experience and expertise. Typical Schedule: 12-hour NOC Shift, Every 3rd Weekend and holiday rotation with a backup call obligation. This position will float to Med/Surg if the department is closed. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: General nursing care responsibilities (but are not limited to): • Provides skilled nursing care in accordance with Nurse Practice Acts, • Follows the Standards of Nursing Care as well as the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation while delivering high quality patient care., • Performs/documents timely/accurate patient assessments/care as outlined in Nursing Standards of Care, • Plans, implements, and documents a focused problem list with goals for each patient, • Evaluates patient progress toward goals, • Continually strives to meet and exceed customer service standards in all interactions with customers, which include patients, visitors, other hospital employees, and medical staff, • Demonstrates a team/collaborative approach with colleagues, • Helps and supports co-workers and physicians, • Helps and supports patients and their families, • Communicates effectively, • Communicates an accurate, concise end of shift patient report in a timely manner, • Interacts with physicians regarding patient status on an on-going basis though SBAR format, • Communicates effectively with all members of the patient care team, • Communicates patient status and plan of care with patient and their family, • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, • Applies knowledge base to clinical situations, • Anticipates patient needs, • Prioritizes patient care based on individual, departmental, and overall hospital patient needs, • Attends staff meetings and mandatory education, • Regularly attends staff meetings at least 80% per year, • Takes initiative to complete all mandatory education requirements including AWHONN/HealthStream without being reminded, • Completes 6 hours of approved continuing education, • Maintains appropriate licenses and certifications independently, • Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse license, • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification Specific Job duties: • Labor and Delivery nursing care responsibilities (but are not limited to):, • Monitors patient throughout (before/during/after) the labor, • Performs basic IV skills, • Knowledge of hemodynamics, • Administers pain medication as ordered, • Takes and records patient’s vital signs, ascertains if problematic, • Reads fetal monitor & ascertains if problematic, • Identifies & manages life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients, • Cares for patients Pitocin, MgSO4 & continuous epidural, • Ensures patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properly, • Aids doctor during delivery and as needed, • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ (both mother and infant) care plans, • Maintains a comfortable, safe and clean environment for mother and infant ? Assists mother with her hygienic needs, • Checks mother for any post-partum bleeding, • Examines mother’s fundus, • Inspects c-section incision (if applicable), • Assesses mother’s pain, if any, • Performs emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to postpartum depression, • Monitors bonding between mother and infant, • Provides mother with breast-feeding tips, Educates mother on sore nipple management, • Teaches mother bathing tips for infant, • Keeps track of all feeds and diapers, • Involves and educates family/significant others in implementing best practices for mother and infant care, • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms, • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting, • Quality improvement activitie - Actively participates in hospital-wide quality improvement activities, • Community Education - Actively participates in community education activities, • Provides outstanding customer service, • Graduate of accredited school of nursing, • One year of acute care experience, • 2-3 years of labor/delivery experience preferred, • Proficient keyboarding and computer skills, • Ability to learn OMC computer applications, • Hospital administrative support, • Human resources or employee scheduling systems, • Currently licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse in good standing, • Current BLS certification, • Current ACLS certification, • Current NRP certification, • Current STABLE certification, • Fetal Heart Monitoring, • Meets OMC health requirements
