Job Description Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) advocates with and for Marylanders experiencing poverty to achieve equity and social justice through free civil legal services, community collaboration, and systemic change. Since 1911, Maryland Legal Aid has provided high-quality legal aid to vulnerable, low-income people and communities – helping to remedy their civil legal issues and become empowered to overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and reach their goals. MLA advocates operate primarily through the courts, via individual representation of indigent clients, but also engage in impact litigation, public communication and outreach, and policy advocacy. Through this holistic approach, Maryland Legal Aid serves to amplify the voices of tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders each year and seeks to be a leader in the legal services field nationwide. About the Role Maryland Legal Aid is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Digital Marketing & Communications Coordinator to help grow our digital presence and deepen engagement with clients, partners, and supporters. This role supports integrated communications and fundraising efforts, amplifying our voice, expanding our reach, and driving online engagement through email, social media, and event outreach. Ideal for an early to mid-career professional passionate about using digital tools to advance social justice and connect communities with critical legal services. This role plays a key support function for the Communications Director, with a strong emphasis on creative writing, storytelling, and content development across earned, owned, and digital channels, as well as capturing compelling photo and video content that centers client and staff voices. About the Team You’ll be joining a newly formed, integrated Development and Communications team at Maryland Legal Aid, an energetic group of 10 professionals, including our dedicated 5-person Grants team. Led by our new Chief Development and Communications Officer, this team is charged with bringing fresh momentum to how we tell our story, engage supporters, and expand our funding base. Together, we’re building a collaborative, mission-driven culture that connects communications and development strategy to elevate Maryland Legal Aid’s profile and grow a vibrant community of donors, partners, and advocates for justice. Responsibilities • Drive constituent growth through deploying a strategy for email list-building, increasing social media followers, text message subscribers, and interaction across channels leveraging industry best practices, • Oversee editorial calendar and content workflow across channels, • Create and schedule content for Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and X using Canva and Hootsuite building out Maryland Legal Aid’s brand voice for social media being strategic about content by channel, • Draft and support the development of clear, engaging written content across platforms, including press releases, social media captions, donor-facing e-newsletters, brochures, flyers, and digital toolkits, in collaboration with the Communications Director, • Design branded digital and paper content (appeal letters, graphics, story cards, donor stewardship pieces, flyers, etc.) using Adobe Creative Suite or Canva, • Maintain and update content on MLA’s WordPress website (e.g., news posts, staff updates, event info), • Responsible for email creation, design, layout, and send for monthly newsletters and fundraising appeals via Bloomerang, • Ensure audience segmentation strategy for email is accurately executed in marketing platform managing inclusions and suppressions and ensure outbound marketing campaigns to ensure adherence to legal standards and internal compliance policies, • Support the development of client and staff impact stories, including assisting with interviews, drafting narrative content, and coordinating internal review and approvals, • Capture short-form video content for social media and email marketing using a smartphone, including basic interview-style footage and b-roll, • Support light video editing for digital channels using Adobe Premiere or similar tools, with guidance and training as needed, • Capture or coordinate photos at community events and support basic photo editing, • Track and report on digital engagement metrics (social, email, web), • 3+ years of experience in digital marketing, communications, or nonprofit outreach, • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communications, with experience drafting content for external audiences such as social media, email newsletters, websites, or print materials, • Experience creating and managing social media content in a professional setting, • Ability to translate complex or sensitive subject matter into clear, accessible, and engaging content for diverse audiences, • Working knowledge of Canva and basic design and layout skills, • Familiarity with WordPress and email marketing tools (Bloomerang a plus), • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, • Comfort collaborating with a Communications Director and other internal stakeholders on drafting, editing, and refining communications materials, • Experience conducting interviews for storytelling purposes or a demonstrated interest and capacity to learn how to interview clients and staff in a respectful, trauma-informed way, • Experience capturing photo and video content using a smartphone; familiarity with Adobe Premiere or similar video editing software preferred This position is based in the Baltimore City office and is a hybrid role with a minimum of two-days per week worked in person. More days in-person may be needed to attend leadership and other relevant meetings. Work duties are typically performed at a desk with regular interaction in-person, videoconference, instant messaging, and email. Benefits The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $70,000.
