The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint academics to strengthen our growing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group. This is an exciting opportunity to support the development of a novel haptic interface that has the potential for significant commercial and societal impact. You will design, prototype, and test different implementation approaches to deploying kinaesthetic haptic feedback into a new well-being device with a handheld form factor. We seek applications from enthusiastic individuals who have an entrepreneurial spirit and are strongly motivated to push the boundaries of knowledge and technology in this area. You will have engineering experience in hardware and/or medical device development, and ideally the design and evaluation of interactive systems with end-users. We are looking for a Research Assistant to participate on an exciting project within our Mechanical Engineering Department. This is a unique opportunity to advance cutting-edge research in additive manufacturing, thermofluid systems, and high-energy physics, with significant potential for impact across aerospace, energy, and healthcare sectors. Over two years, the Research Associate you will design, manufacture, and commission of a bespoke CO2 cooling rig during the first year. You will be based primarily at the University of Bath with extended secondments to CERN. The second year will focus on fluid modelling and experimental validation and involve collaboration with CERN and the University of Bergamo. Whilst working closely with a PhD student who will integrate these insights into generative design workflows. The role is a Postdoctoral Research Associate position available for up to 12 months to develop advanced optical fibre technologies for ultraviolet (UV-C) quantum key distribution (QKD) in satellite communication networks. This well-resourced and collaborative project is led by the University of Bristol , with partners at the Universities of Strathclyde and York and Fraunhofer UK , and aims to extend the security benefits of quantum communication to a truly global scale. Working closely with our collaborators, you will contribute to the development of a hollow-core optical fibre designed to operate in the UV-C spectral region (100–280 nm). The fibre will act as a mode-filtering solution that ensures secure quantum key distribution without disturbing the polarisation encoding—addressing one of the most challenging aspects of satellite-based quantum communication systems . You will design, fabricate, and characterise hollow-core fibres that are single-moded at UV-C wavelengths and exhibit temperature- and stress-independent polarisation behaviour . Your work will draw on the University of Bath’s research-grade optical fibre fabrication cleanroom and state-of-the-art photonics laboratories. The project offers an opportunity to expand your expertise in fibre fabrication, UV photonics, and quantum technologies , and to contribute to the development of a pathfinder platform for future global quantum networks . You will hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate in experimental photonics, quantum optics, or a related discipline . Posess strong experimental skills and a solid understanding of optical waveguides and light–matter interactions are required. Experience with optical fibre fabrication, hollow-core fibre, or ultraviolet photonics will be advantageous but is not essential. Working closely with another Programmes Manager you will lead the Taught Programmes Team in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
