Job DescriptionDirector of Finance Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school of 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking a Director of Finance to join our Business Office team immediately but no later than July 1, 2026. This position is a 12 month, exempt position with a contract year running July through June. The Director of Finance is a senior financial leader responsible for stewarding Porter-Gaud School's financial resources in support of its mission and long-term sustainability. The Director of Finance oversees the school's accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, treasury functions, endowment and debt activity, audits, and internal controls. This role blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution in a complex independent school environment. Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesStrategic Financial Leadership • Serve as a key financial advisor to the Assistant Head for Finance & Operations and Head of School on budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning, and financial sustainability., • Contribute to institutional strategy by providing data-driven insights, scenario modeling, and recommendations that support mission-aligned decision-making., • Collaborate with the Assistant Head for Finance & Operations in the development of the annual operating and capital budgets and multi-year financial plans., • Monitor income, expenses, and cash flow throughout the year; analyze variances; and recommend actions to improve financial performance and asset utilization., • Manage all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, and month-end and year-end close processes., • Establish, maintain, and communicate robust accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard school assets and mitigate risk., • Own and manage the school's banking and treasury relationships., • Work closely with the school's Investment consultant and Advancement team to execute multimillion-dollar endowment transactions and oversee related accounting and reporting., • Manage the annual financial audit, serving as the primary liaison with the school's external auditors., • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and lender covenants., • Coordinate with Institutional Advancement to ensure that gifts, pledges, and restricted funds are accurately recorded and expended in accordance with donor intent., • Provide financial oversight and reporting for major construction, renovation, and campus development projects., • Lead, mentor, and develop the Business Office team by setting clear expectations, providing training and feedback, and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented culture., • Serve as a trusted financial resource to administrators, department leaders, and program directors across campus., • Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders. RESPONSIBILITIES Preconstruction • Assist the Business Developer in understanding the customer's vision for each project, • Collaborate with the project team to create comprehensive business strategies aligned with project goals, • Assist in selecting design professionals tailored to specific project requirements for optimal outcomes, • Ensure thorough critique of every project estimate by knowledgeable peers within the construction group Manage Project Design • Provide leadership in creating project estimates and the technical aspects of proposals, • Contribute to strategy development for all project estimates to align with objectives, • Lead or assist in preparing "scope of work" for vendor solicitation, • Manage the creation of conceptual and detailed estimates, along with technical specifications for project proposals, • Oversee bid analysis and ensure selected bids cover project scope before contracting, • Direct the project design team effectively Project Execution • Meet or exceed customer expectations while achieving company benchmarks and upholding Corporate Beliefs, • Monitor project profitability, notifying managers of significant changes (+/-) promptly, • Delegate specific project responsibilities to team members, ensuring effective execution, • Prepare a list of project responsibilities for clear task assignment, • Negotiate and document vendor/subcontracts agreements efficiently, • Ensure completion of all construction drawings (seek input from Superintendent), • Provide project forecast updates in Viewpoint monthly at a minimum., • Monitor project cost variances and inform relevant stakeholders, researching cost-effective solutions, • Manage overall project profitability in collaboration with the project Superintendent, • Facilitate client and subcontractor meetings, maintaining meeting notes and agendas, • Build and nurture client relationships for project success, • Mentor and train subordinates to enhance team performance, • Participate in sales strategy sessions to support project goals, • Continuously seek cost-saving and process improvement strategies for project efficiency, • Capably handle multiple projects and estimates simultaneously, leveraging Procore for comprehensive project management, • Create and maintain project schedules using Microsoft Project for effective time management, • Effectively leverage the time of Supervisor/Superintendent for optimal project execution, • Enforce the highest safety standards on all projects and with all direct reports to maintain a secure working environment QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE • ~4-7 years of internal or external experience in a similar role or education equivalent. Specialized expertise in multiple systems, processes, and market sectors, • Education or Education Equivalent: 4-year degree in Engineering, Construction, or Architecture from an accredited College or University. What is a Tri-Axle Driver? • This person drives our dump trucks. They haul asphalt, granite, sand, and other materials to and from our projects., • This person transports equipment from job to job for our crews., • This person hauls liquid asphalt from the terminal in North Charleston to our Summerville and N Charleston Asphalt Plants., • This person hauls cement from the cement plants in Holly Hill to our reclamation job sites throughout the Lowcountry., • This person fills up with tack at our N Charleston facility, drives to our jobs, and sprays tack to prep the road for paving. This person spends their day with the paving crew., • This person transports fuel from our asphalt plants to equipment on various jobsites., • This person works with the paving crew to sweep the road properly before and/or after milling and paving operations.
