Zeta Energy has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, exceptionally resourceful, and very organized Laboratory Operations & Safety Manager to work in a critical role of maintaining the daily operations and environmental, health, & safety of our state-of-the-art R&D laboratories. The Laboratory Operations & Safety Manager will facilitate and manage a wide range of laboratory activities, including managing projects & contractors; tracking tools, equipment & materials; scheduling equipment calibration; maintaining & servicing equipment; purchase orders; administrative duties; and generating monthly reports. As Zeta Energy transitions its game-changing technology from the laboratory to the factory floor, the Laboratory Operations & Safety Manager will support the commercialization of patented, high-energy, high-power, and low-cost battery technology. You will be expected to stay organized, have a positive attitude, and consistently keep our R&D laboratory working effectively and efficiently. Key Responsibilities: • Consistently provide a high level of facilitator service to Zeta Energy staff, vendors, and visitors, • Coordinate improvement and maintenance of existing laboratory infrastructure and oversee laboratory expansion and future buildout if necessary., • Review and approve laboratory access requests, • Develop, manage, and conduct safety orientations; organize and conduct routine safety inspections; and schedule periodic safety inspections, • Help maintain high operation and safety standards within the laboratories, • Schedule, conduct, and where appropriate, periodically improve internal laboratory auditing processes, • Ensure laboratory HAZMAT is appropriately managed and disposed, including but not limited to managing SDS documentation, helping develop safety protocols, and ensuring inventory is indexed and accurate, • Manage the calibration and preventative maintenance of all assets within the lab. Ensure these activities occur before expiry while also considering the demands of ongoing use, • Monitor and approve access to team file storage, internal wikis, and lab task/job-tracking tools. Monitor incoming tasks to ensure incoming information is complete and samples are available for testing. Assist in the management of "Concerns/Troubles" log used by scientist/engineers to document problems and trace corrective actions and resolution, • Coordinate material shipping, including hazardous materials, and chemical waste disposal, • Manage the creation (and where appropriate) approval of purchase requests to support projects and laboratory operations, • Monitor spending and develop a reporting structure to communicate trends and actuals against plans or previous years, • Meeting coordination and conference room reservations & set-up, as needed. Attend meetings, if necessary, for taking minutes and documenting other information, • Assist in the management of high-level team projects, create and maintain collaborative project directories and cloud-based file sharing sites, • Administrative tasks as assigned or as necessary Requirements: • Minimum of BS or equivalent in a physical science, engineering, or technology discipline, • 5+ years of laboratory leadership experience required (or 3+ years with MS) in an industrial, university, or government R&D laboratory or pilot plant environment, • Ability to learn new information and ideas, have a positive attitude with initiative, and be motivated to work collaboratively, • Understanding of scientific/engineering fundamentals and hands-on experience working and/or maintaining equipment in the laboratory, • Working knowledge of HVAC, air abatement, fume hood controls, and other elements of laboratory infrastructure, • Hands-on skills on mechanical, electrical, and vacuum systems/devices, • Ability to read and generate process flow and workflow diagrams, • Understanding of enterprise information technology infrastructure and physical facility security systems, • Understanding and experience with regulatory requirements for laboratories, shipping and disposal of hazardous materials, e.g., OSHA health & safety regulations, hazardous materials regulations, etc., • Ability to effectively prioritize with strong time management skills in a fast-paced environment, • Very professional with a strong sense of urgency, highly organized, and detail-oriented, • Ability to organize and manage projects, source and coordinate contractors, • Some knowledge and understanding of operating budgets and financial statements, • Superb verbal & written communication skills, ability to prepare professional, high quality reports, sophisticated skills in MS Office Suite (Word, Teams, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), • Ability to respond appropriately and direct others during emergencies; ability to evacuate the facility in a timely manner should an emergency arise; and ability to wear and properly use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if working or visiting within the laboratory area. PPE may include safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, hard hat, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done. Location and Travel Requirements: • This position is located in Houston, Texas. Travel could include occasional domestic travel to other cities and states and foreign travel, possibly to Europe, to support Zeta Energy projects and assets, to collaborate with partners and vendors, or to attend training courses.
