Job DescriptionJob Summary The Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, qualifying, and continuously improving welding processes used in the production of wedge wire and filtration screen products. This includes precision TIG and resistance welding for thin wire and rod assemblies, custom mandrel applications, and ensuring compliance with both internal and industry standards. The role requires collaboration across engineering, production, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure process stability, high product quality, and operational efficiency. Key ResponsibilitiesWelding Process Development & Qualification • Develop, qualify, and document welding procedures (WPS, PQR, WPQR) tailored for wedge wire screen assemblies., • Specify welding methods, parameters, and consumables optimized for fine-wire and stainless steel components., • Support and maintain automated and orbital welding systems.Production Support & Continuous Improvement, • Provide real-time troubleshooting of welding issues, minimize rework, and support root cause analysis., • Lead improvement projects aimed at scrap reduction, cycle time optimization, and weld quality enhancement., • Apply lean manufacturing tools (SMED, Kaizen, 5S) to the welding and fabrication areas.Tooling & Fixture Development, • Collaborate with tooling engineers to develop custom mandrels, winding fixtures, and weld jigs., • Support design and maintenance of tooling for high-precision welding of cylindrical and conical screens.Quality & Compliance, • Establish weld inspection criteria and support integration of slot width measurement systems (optical, laser)., • Ensure compliance with relevant standards such as AWS D1.6, ASME Section IX, and customer-specific requirements., • Document weld procedures and maintain compliance records for audits.New Product Introduction (NPI) & DFM Support, • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on manufacturability and weldability of new screen designs., • Support pilot runs and scale-up for new or custom products requiring unique welding setups.Training & Documentation, • Train weld technicians on best practices and ensure adherence to qualified procedures., • Create and maintain detailed work instructions and visual aids for welding operations.Required Qualifications, • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline., • 3+ years of experience in welding process engineering, preferably in a precision manufacturing environment., • Strong knowledge of TIG, resistance, and automated welding processes., • Familiarity with stainless steels and corrosion-resistant alloys used in filtration products., • Experience with welding standards and codes (e.g., AWS, ASME)., • Proficiency in CAD software and understanding of fixture/tooling design.Preferred Qualifications, • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) credentials., • Experience with screen fabrication or custom metal filtration components., • Professional standing with appropriate professional society such as AWS or ASQ is highly desirable., • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification and the ability to administer an approved welding program., • ASNT TC-1A Certified Level III in one or more NDE methods is highly desirable, but not required., • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make actionable recommendations., • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical publications related to welding, materials, and manufacturing processes., • Medical/Dental/Vision - Family Coverage Available, • Safe Harbor 401(k) - 5% Employer Match, • Group Term Life Insurance - Additional Coverage Available, • 10 Paid Holidays per Year, • Sick Time & Vacation Time, • Short & Long Term Disability Insurance, • Critical Illness Insurance, • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Johnson Screens is an equal opportunity employer: Veterans, Disabled, Minorities and Women.
