Job Description Stainless Steel Pipe Welder Job Description This role requires a highly skilled TIG welder with strong experience in stainless steel process piping and 6G welding. You will perform precise open-root butt welds on stainless steel pipe across various schedules, interpret technical drawings and welding symbols, and consistently produce high-quality welds in a clean shop environment. The position demands excellent hand–eye coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team on a variety of changing projects. Responsibilities • Perform high-quality TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel pipe, including open root butt welds on Schedule 10 through Schedule 160 pipe., • Execute butt welding of stainless steel pipe by properly beveling pipe ends, cleaning joint areas, and utilizing GTAW (TIG) techniques to achieve 100% penetration., • Carry out open root butt welding on stainless steel pipe with appropriate root gaps and bevels to ensure full penetration and high-strength joints., • Perform 6G pipe welding on fixed pipes positioned at 45 degrees, mastering flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead weld positions within a single joint., • Apply back purging techniques to protect the root side of welds with inert gas, preventing oxidation, contamination, and sugaring on stainless steel and other reactive metals., • Set up and operate TIG torches (200 AMP or higher) and related welding equipment, and when needed, utilize flux core and MIG processes for applicable tasks., • Interpret and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan and execute accurate welds on pipe, stairs, ladders, and other fabricated structures., • Select appropriate welding parameters, consumables, and techniques based on pipe schedule, material thickness, and service conditions, including high-pressure applications., • Inspect welds visually and with basic measuring tools to verify alignment, fit-up, and weld quality, making necessary adjustments to maintain standards., • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools such as squares, levels, hold pins, and tape measures are used correctly and kept in good condition., • Follow all welding safety protocols, including proper use of PPE, safe handling of equipment, and adherence to shop safety procedures., • Collaborate with team members in both shop and field settings to complete projects efficiently while meeting quality and schedule requirements., • Adapt to a variety of projects and tasks, including pipe welding, structural components such as stairs and ladders, and other custom fabrication work., • Work consistent overtime as required, maintaining productivity and quality standards during extended hours. Essential Skills • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a TIG welder, specifically working with stainless steel process piping and 6G welding., • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel, including thin-wall and heavy-wall pipe across multiple schedules (Schedule 10–160)., • Demonstrated ability in 6G pipe welding, welding fixed pipes at a 45-degree angle in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions., • Strong capability in open root butt welding on stainless steel pipe, including precise joint preparation, fit-up, and full penetration welds., • Hands-on experience with back purging techniques using inert gas (typically Argon) to protect the root side of welds on stainless steel and other reactive metals., • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols accurately., • Excellent hand–eye coordination, manual dexterity, and attention to detail for precise weld control., • Solid understanding of the metallurgical properties of stainless steel and related alloys as they apply to welding and joint integrity., • Familiarity with welding safety protocols and consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)., • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a welding and fabrication team. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience welding 2-inch Schedule 80 stainless steel pipe and other high-pressure piping applications., • Knowledge of industrial, plumbing, or high-pressure piping systems where thicker-wall pipe such as Schedule 80 is commonly used., • Exposure to or proficiency with additional processes such as flux core and MIG welding when required by the project., • Understanding of the specific requirements and standards associated with critical, high-pressure industrial applications, such as those found in oil and gas or similar industries., • Ability to manage multiple types of fabrication work, including pipe welding, stairs, ladders, and other structural components., • Comfort working in both shop and field environments, adjusting to different project conditions and setups. Work Environment The position is based in a clean, modern shop environment with opportunities to support field work as needed. The standard schedule follows a first shift from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., typically working five 10-hour days each week, with a minimum of 50 hours and 10–20 hours of overtime available, and weekends are rarely required. You will work with TIG torches rated at 200 AMP or higher and use tools such as squares, two-hole pins, levels, and tape measures to ensure accurate fit-up and alignment. Proper personal protective equipment is required, including safety footwear such as steel-toed boots and an appropriate welding hood, in line with established safety practices for a fabrication and welding shop. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $40.00/hr.
