The role will architect, develop, operate, and support storage, network, virtualisation and server infrastructure to standards necessary to enable internationally competitive research. The role will be based within a well-established research facility at the University, providing advanced research computing support to departments across campus. This includes provision of a managed Linux desktop environment for research computing, large scale data storage facilities, and high-performance computing (HPC). The infrastructure team provides an expertise pool in scientific hardware deployments, installations, monitoring, problem solving and problem mitigation. This team underpins all the activities of Computational Research at the University. This post will have a clear strategic position managing the research storage and providing core services via the virtualisation platform. • Development, maintenance and monitoring of our storage systems., • Development, maintenance and monitoring of a new virtualisation platform., • Support of our datacentre activities. Duties • Lead on the architectural design of storage and virtualisation systems, as well as network and underlying server infrastructure to specifications and standards necessary to enable internationally competitive research., • Operate and maintain server infrastructure based on appropriate Linux distributions., • Co-ordinate infrastructure operations within the broader context of research computing facilities, the Linux desktop, the High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and the virtualisation facilities, by working with the team., • Work with the team to operate and maintain any of the facilities with special focus on the storage and virtualisation systems using expert skills in Linux system administration., • Develop and manage appropriate information security polices, within university policy and in articulation with the central security team, to ensure an ongoing process of software maintenance and patching is in place on the facilities., • Design and implement storage backup and disaster recovery procedures in line with relevant policies and processes for the facilities., • Write and maintain documentation on system design and management processes to ensure knowledge is accessible and disseminated appropriately within the team., • Work with the team to implement configuration management and revision control processes to ensure changes are properly tracked and available for audit when needed., • Work with the team to implement infrastructure monitoring and alerting systems to ensure problems are detected and downtime reduced., • Plan and implement physical infrastructure deployments within the data centre working with the Estates Office and the Information and Digital Group where needed., • Test and evaluate new technology for future use as part of the facilities., • Provide reasonable and appropriate out-of-hours systems support where warranted by major disruption or outages affecting mission-critical services. Requirements • Degree, or equivalent, in a subject relevant to scientific computing., • Strong track record in Linux or UNIX system administration gained in a large scale, technology-driven environment with good exposure to server and storage hardware., • Experience of working as part of a highly skilled technical team., • Experience of supporting expert users in a research environment as well as providing documentation and training materials., • Expert knowledge of storage technologies including NAS, iSCSI, FC, volume management, replication, mirroring, tiering, RAID concepts, erasure code, clustering, snapshots, and filesystems, such as NFS, SMB, Ceph or MinIO as well as backup and archive., • Ability to implement automated approaches to data movement., • Expert knowledge of virtualisation solutions including KVM, oVirt and Proxmox and server virtualisation technologies., • A good, working knowledge of Ethernet networks., • Knowledge and experience with Internet services such as DNS and network protocols relevant to system administration e.g. DHCP, PXE, TFTP and IPv4/IPv6., • A high level of knowledge of automated Linux provisioning and deployment techniques as well as experience with automated software packaging, deployment techniques, configuration management, revision control and support tracking systems., • Good awareness of cluster and HPC technology., • A security-conscious approach to system administration including knowledge of encryption technologies, network security, operating system hardening, vulnerability awareness, system logging and security auditing., • Practical knowledge of programming and scripting languages appropriate to system administration., • Good awareness and practical knowledge of data centre operations., • Experience in preparing draft financial plans for upgrade and future expansions based on customer user requirements. Desirable • Experience of working in a data-intensive, research environment., • Experience of working in a user-facing environment., • Knowledge and understanding of storage technology integration into research infrastructure such as high-performance computing, data-intensive computing and/or experimental facilities.
