THE ROLE: To provide pro-active and commercial HR advice, support and guidance to line managers and staff on all aspects of our employment policies and practices. The HR Advisor will support business areas, building and developing sustainable relationships with managers and staff at all levels. The HR Advisor will provide both a remote and face to face advisory service particularly on our key people policies of attendance management, discipline, grievance, conduct, capability, and family friendly. This includes responsibility for case management across the business area and supporting an HR Business Partner on any escalated and/or complex case management as required. This role will also be responsible for key HR projects that enable delivery of the HR Directorate’s strategy. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: • Build effective and sustainable working relationships with managers at all levels, developing a good understanding of their business to deliver commercial HR advice on all people policies., • Provide general people policy advice and guidance on our various people policies to line managers and staff by telephone or face to face., • Provide advice and guidance on conduct, capability and performance matters including discipline and grievance. Support line managers in the investigation of cases and attend and support formal meetings or hearings., • Provide advice and guidance on all aspects of attendance management. Support line managers to proactively manage their short term, frequent and long-term absences. Advise managers on the case management of individual cases and provide occupational health and wellbeing interventions for staff at work and off sick., • Support line managers in the investigation of absence cases and attend and support at formal meetings or hearings., • Support the Employee Relations team in individual or collective trade union matters across the area of business the HR Advisor supports including input to individual cases raised by the trade unions or supporting negotiation or consultation matters. This may include attending union meetings and taking minutes of formal meetings as required., • Manage the redeployment process for Off Train Running (OTR) safety critical roles and individual cases with the business and manager., • Familiarise and understand key people metrics across the organisation and the business area supported so that advice and guidance is relevant, commercial, and business focused., • Identify hot spots, trends or process improvements from the advisory service provided to help inform and shape change and improvements across the HR function., • Keep abreast of internal policy changes and external employment legislation and case law to ensure a modern, legal, and commercial advisory service is provided to managers and staff., • Advise managers and support staff on complex family friendly cases where advice and guidance is required, liaising with occupational health as appropriate, • Analyse people data and reports provided by People Services, shape and influence future development and provide administrative data reporting where required., • Identify best practice across the business area and managers and how this influences and shapes current and future guidance and policy., • Manage risk through the escalation of inappropriate practices, significant policy deviation or failure to meet timescales to the HR Business Partner; identify any training or awareness gaps across the business area, • Support the HR Business Partner and business lead in business organisational design reviews and voluntary leavers scheme., • Ensure that advice sought by managers or staff on contracts of employment and recruitment are referred to the Recruitment Team, minimising handoffs wherever possible., • Build a sustainable working relationship with other HR Advisor(s) and HR Business Partners to maximise personal and functional effectiveness., • Support HR Business Partners in preparation for case hearings at Employment Tribunal, • Lead or support HR projects that enable delivery of the HR strategy applying standard project methodologies and disciplines. Maintain the project plan and reporting. This list is not exhaustive, and the role holder is expected to undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role. What you Bring: • CIPD qualified or equivalent educational achievement, • A demonstrable track record of working in an HR function or supporting people management., • Excellent communication skills, works effectively with a team and can provide clear and consistent employment advice., • Ability to act with substantial discretion and professionalism., • Ability to resolve conflicts and seek appropriate solutions., • Creative and analytical thinking style, applying tenacity where required., • A proactive approach to work and problem solving, and the ability to spot and deal with issues as they occur., • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to persuade, influence and where appropriate, challenge robustly., • Sound understanding of the principles of good HR practices and employment law., • Proficient in IT packages including excel and power point.
