NYSCI has approximately 87 full-time and over 103 part-time and casual staff members. POSITION OVERVIEW The Senior Accountant supports the Finance Department by performing advanced accounting functions, including accounts payable, monthly and year-end closing entries, grant-related accounting tasks, audit preparation, financial reporting, and maintaining the general ledger in accordance with GAAP. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage complex accounting activities with minimal supervision. Key Responsibilities Accounting & General Ledger • Process all accounts payable transactions, including invoice entry, coding, vendor setup, ACH/wire payments, and reconciliation of departmental credit card accounts., • Perform day-to-day accounting activities, including reconciliations, accounts payable processing, revenue accounting, and review of restricted and unrestricted transactions., • Prepare and post monthly and quarterly closing entries to support a timely and accurate period-end close., • Maintain accurate and organized accounting records in compliance with internal controls and audit requirements., • Research and resolve discrepancies related to invoices, expenses, payments, and vendor records., • Prepare, review, and assist with filing annual 1099 forms in compliance with IRS requirements., • Track vendor payments to ensure accurate 1099 reporting., • Ensure adherence to GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal financial policies., • Support month-end and year-end closing activities., • Assist with ad hoc accounting projects and administrative tasks as assigned., • Minimum 4–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment., • Experience with grant accounting and restricted funding strongly preferred., • Strong understanding of accounting principles, GAAP, and nonprofit financial regulations., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace., • Strong computer skills, including intermediate or advanced use of accounting systems and databases., • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial information accurately and make sound decisions., • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams., • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities., • High ethical standards and commitment to transparent financial practices., • Commitment to the mission and values of the New York Hall of Science.
