Job Description Job Title: Equipment Maintenance Technician Job Description The Equipment Maintenance Technician maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide range of production, engineering, and facility systems in a cleanroom and laboratory environment. This role focuses on photonics test equipment, semiconductor and photolithography tools, vacuum systems, and facility infrastructure, ensuring high equipment uptime and reliable operation. The technician works hands-on with tools and equipment, creatively solves complex technical problems, and documents processes to support long-term system reliability and compliance. Responsibilities • Maintain and repair production and engineering systems, including photonics test equipment, wafer process equipment, and vacuum systems., • Perform regular preventive maintenance on vacuum pumps, thermal chambers, optical fiber equipment, and wire bonding equipment., • Troubleshoot equipment and systems independently, diagnosing issues and completing repairs whenever possible before engaging external vendors., • Identify root causes of recurring equipment problems and implement durable, long-term corrective actions., • Recommend cost-effective repair approaches and alternative components or methods to extend equipment life and reduce downtime., • Source replacement parts using both traditional and non-traditional channels, including surplus suppliers, online marketplaces, and technical forums., • Reverse-engineer or adapt technical solutions when original equipment manufacturer support or parts are no longer available., • Fabricate or modify mechanical or simple electronic components when necessary to restore or improve equipment performance., • Maintain and troubleshoot facility infrastructure, including HVAC systems and cleanroom environmental controls., • Support and maintain DI water supply systems, basic plumbing, and related facility utilities., • Assist with electrical and basic building systems maintenance within the facility., • Coordinate and communicate with external vendors and service providers when specialized maintenance or repairs are required., • Learn existing systems and processes from internal experts and translate that knowledge into clear, practical documentation., • Create and maintain usable maintenance procedures, checklists, and records for equipment and facility systems., • Ensure maintenance practices and documentation comply with ISO 9001:2015 and applicable contract requirements., • Minimum 2-year technical degree (AA or AS) or equivalent hands-on experience in a technical or maintenance role., • Strong practical, hands-on aptitude and comfort working directly with tools, machinery, and technical equipment., • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and facility systems methodically and efficiently., • Experience with equipment maintenance in manufacturing, laboratory, or industrial settings., • Ability to work independently and proactively with incomplete information, using sound judgment to drive issues to resolution., • Creative and persistent problem-solving skills with a strong "make it work" mindset., • Familiarity with HVAC systems and cleanroom environmental control concepts., • Familiarity with plumbing and DI water systems and their basic maintenance requirements., • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical troubleshooting techniques., • Familiarity with vacuum systems and wafer processing or semiconductor equipment., • Ability to document maintenance procedures and system knowledge clearly and accurately., • Experience in facilities maintenance, equipment maintenance, or laboratory/engineering/R&D support environments., • Experience with semiconductor equipment maintenance and photolithography equipment maintenance., • Experience in HVAC maintenance or HVAC cleanroom maintenance., • Robotics exposure or experience supporting automated or robotic systems., • Experience with photonics test equipment, wafer process tools, and related laboratory instruments., • Fabrication or machining skills for creating or modifying mechanical components., • Light electronics repair skills, including basic soldering and component replacement., • Experience working in a startup, small company, or laboratory environment where flexibility and resourcefulness are important., • Comfort sourcing parts and solutions through non-traditional channels such as surplus suppliers, online marketplaces, and technical forums. Work Environment The role is based in a cleanroom and laboratory setting within a small, quiet company of approximately 20 people. You will work closely with production and engineering teams, supporting photonics test equipment, semiconductor and photolithography tools, vacuum systems, and facility infrastructure. The environment emphasizes cleanliness and contamination control, with appropriate cleanroom protocols and attire required when working in controlled areas. Work involves frequent hands-on interaction with tools, machinery, HVAC systems, DI water systems, and basic building infrastructure. The small headcount fosters close collaboration, direct communication, and a focused, low-noise atmosphere where technicians can concentrate on detailed technical tasks. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of San Jose, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $52.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
