Job Description Trim / Finish Carpenter (High-End / Luxury Finishes) Department / Reports To: Operations; Superintendent. Classification: Non-exempt (hourly skilled trade position) Job Summary A Trim / Finish Carpenter specializing in high-end finishes is responsible for installing, fitting, and finishing architectural millwork and trim components with exceptional precision and craftsmanship. This role demands a strong eye for detail, mastery of fine woodworking techniques, and the ability to interpret complex design and shop drawings. The Trim Carpenter will work on luxury residential or high-end commercial interiors, executing trim, built-ins, cabinetry, custom moldings, stairwork, and other decorative wood elements to an exacting standard. Duties & Responsibilities Review and interpret architectural drawings, shop drawings, elevations, and specifications for millwork, trim, cabinetry, and finish carpentry. Layout, measure, cut, scribe, and fit various trim and millwork (e.g. crown molding, baseboard, casing, panel molding, chair rails, wainscoting, box-outs, picture rails) so they align seamlessly with adjacent surfaces and transitions. Install door and window jambs, casings, architraves, plinth blocks, thresholds, custom moldings, and specialty trim. Install cabinetry, built-in furniture, bookcases, shelving systems, mantels, and interior paneling, ensuring tight joints, proper alignment, and consistent reveals. Fabricate (in shop or field) and install custom millwork components as required (returns, cope joints, fillets, shadow lines, decorative elements). Fit, hang, and adjust doors, including stile-and-rail doors, flush doors, pocket doors, and hardware (hinges, backsets, multipoint locks). Sand, veneer, fill, and prepare surfaces for finishing (stain, paint, clear coat), ensuring all wood joints and connections are crisp and invisible. Anticipate and correct alignment issues, gaps, or irregularities in field conditions (e.g. uneven walls, out-of-plumb conditions). Coordinate closely with finishers, painters, cabinetmakers, and other trades to ensure seamless handover and that woodwork tolerances meet overall finish quality. Maintain quality control: inspect all installed work, correct defects (e.g., gaps, misalignments, tear-out) and ensure that tolerances are tight. Maintain, calibrate, and care for tools, power equipment, and layout devices (miter saws, routers, planers, shapers, jointers, sanders) to ensure accuracy. Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe; comply with all safety policies, including fall protection, dust control, and PPE requirements. Occasionally assemble or pre-fit millwork in the shop, and transport or stage materials on-site. Provide field measurements, as-built verification, and revision feedback to designers and shop fabricators. Assist in mentoring or supervising junior carpenters or apprentices where applicable. Perform other carpentry tasks consistent with the skills of a trim/finish carpenter as needed. Skills, Qualifications & Experience Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of finish and trim carpentry, especially in high-end residential or commercial work. Proven ability to produce extremely tight joints, coped moldings, mitered returns, flush joints, and consistent reveals in complex geometries. Strong understanding of wood movement, grain matching, and how to deal with warp, twist, and shrinkage. Proficient in reading and interpreting architectural, millwork, and shop drawings. Skilled in layout, hand and power tools, advanced woodworking machines (jointers, shapers, planers, routers), and precise measuring instruments (digital calipers, angle finders, laser levels). Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to adapt in the field when conditions don’t match plans. High attention to detail, with a finish-oriented mindset—“the imperceptible seam” is the standard. Good communication skills; able to coordinate with other trades, foremen, and clients as needed. Physical stamina: able to lift heavy boards, work overhead, and perform extended periods of standing, bending, and kneeling. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites. Own basic set of high-quality hand tools; familiarity with and ability to maintain power tool fleet. (Preferred) Carpentry trade school training, apprenticeship, or formal millwork background. (Preferred) Previous experience in custom millwork shops or high-end luxury home builds. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements Work is primarily on job sites (new construction, luxury homes, high-end interiors) and occasionally in millwork shops or joinery facilities. May involve working at heights, on ladders, scaffolding or temporary platforms. Exposure to dust, wood particles, adhesives, finishing materials (masking, solvents), and variable environmental conditions (heat, humidity). Requires use of PPE (dust masks or respirators, eye and ear protection, gloves). Ability to lift up to 75–100 lbs (or more with assistance) and to work in awkward or tight spaces. Must maintain high level of cleanliness to protect finished surfaces and avoid scratches or contamination. Occasional overtime, weekend work, or compressed schedules may be required to meet deadlines on finish work. Success Metrics & Quality Standards Millwork and trim installations that pass inspection with minimal or no punch-list items for gaps, alignment issues, or surface defects. Adherence to design intent, maintaining tolerances for joints, reveals, and transitions. Meet project scheduling milestones, coordinating handoffs to finishing trades smoothly. Low rework rate on trim/millwork tasks. Maintain tools in accurate calibration, and minimal downtime due to tool failure. Positive client, architect, or general contractor feedback regarding craftsmanship, finish quality, and professionalism. Prevailing Wages for this role may apply.
