Job Description SUMMARY/PURPOSE The Evening Custodian supports a safe, clean, and well‑maintained learning and work environment for students, staff, and visitors at Summit Academy OIC. This role is responsible for the general maintenance and clean-up of the building and grounds of Summit Academy OIC. Success in this position ensures that facilities and grounds meet the needs of our students, enables organizational productivity through reliable and high‑quality custodial services, and aligns daily work with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Building Cleaning & Sanitation • Dry sweep; wet and dry mop floors; vacuum, spot clean, and shampoo carpets., • Strip, wax, and buff floors using appropriate equipment and products., • Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish restroom supplies., • Clean windows, walls, windowsills, screens, and interior glass., • Dust, wash, wax, and polish furniture, counters, woodwork, and metal surfaces., • Empty, clean, and properly dispose of trash and recycling. Classroom, Office & Lab Support • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, common areas, and construction and trades labs., • Set up and break down rooms for meetings, classes, and events, including moving and arranging tables, chairs, and equipment., • Ensure instructional and training areas are clean, safe, and ready for student use., • Turn off lights and secure rooms and doors as required. Maintenance & Repairs • Perform Handyman work, including repairs, installation of building materials and technology, drywalling, minor carpentry, plumbing, wiring, and other tasks as needed., • Manage multiple maintenance projects, planning timelines, materials, and impact on the organization., • Observe, identify, and report facility repair needs that are beyond the scope of this position., • Perform minor, non‑technical repairs such as replacing light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and ballasts., • Perform basic maintenance and repair tasks as directed, including painting, furniture repair and assembly, and basic lock removal and installation., • Assist with minor carpentry, wiring, and plumbing tasks as directed., • Monitor and report issues related to electrical, lighting, heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems. Grounds & Exterior Services • Sweep sidewalks and building entrances., • Perform grounds maintenance duties such as mowing, trimming hedges, watering lawns, and caring for plants., • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entryways, and building access points., • Support safe access to campus buildings during all seasons and weather conditions. Safety, Inventory & Operations • Safely operate custodial equipment, power cleaning equipment, and hand tools., • Properly use, store, and mix cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with safety guidelines., • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and notify supervisor when restocking is needed., • Follow all safety procedures and report hazards, accidents, and unsafe conditions. Communication & Team Support • Attend organizational, departmental, and individual meetings as required., • Communicate effectively with supervisors and staff regarding facility needs and work completed. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and time management skills., • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, procedures, and written or verbal instructions., • Ability to complete routine and assigned tasks thoroughly with minimal supervision., • Ability to properly use cleaning supplies, custodial equipment, and basic maintenance tools., • Ability to operate machinery, power equipment, and hand tools safely and effectively. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY This position has no direct reports. WORK ENVIRONMENT This position operates in a school and office campus environment that includes classrooms, administrative offices, common areas, restrooms, construction and skilled‑trades labs, storage areas, and building mechanical spaces. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions. The role routinely uses custodial and maintenance equipment such as vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, carpet cleaners, ladders, hand tools, grounds equipment, snow removal equipment, and cleaning chemicals. PHYSICAL DEMANDS • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the work shift., • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds., • Frequently bend, squat, kneel, climb, reach, and work at or above shoulder height., • Perform repetitive motions using hands and arms while cleaning, operating equipment, and handling tools., • Work safely around construction and training equipment in lab environments., • Work both indoors and outdoors, including exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, noise, and all types of weather conditions. POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime pay. The position will work 30-34 hours each week. Regular hours: Monday through Thursday, 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. OR Tuesday through Thursday, 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Friday 11:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Additional hours may be required to meet operational needs. Position is required to work on site. TRAVEL This position may require limited local travel. REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • High school diploma or GED., • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • One (1) year of experience working in a maintenance, janitorial, or custodial role in a school or large building environment with significant foot traffic., • Two (2) years of experience working in a janitorial or custodial position.
