Job Description MANAGER OR DIRECTOR OF PATHWAYS OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION SCORE is committed to ensuring that all Tennessee students are prepared for success from education to career. A critical component of this goal is centered on advancing education-to-work pathways for students. These pathways are essential to ensuring that all students have opportunities for credentials, degrees, and ultimately careers that lead to economic independence. SCORE is adding a new position to support our efforts to advance this vision through a portfolio of initiatives that strengthen and advance education-to-workforce pathways across Tennessee. Understanding that each candidate approaches this work with different background experiences and unique skill sets, we are hiring either a manager or director role to support this portfolio of work and will not be prescriptive about this role’s level and scope. Instead we will determine the level at which to hire based on candidates’ unique experiences. Across SCORE’s pathways portfolio and various workstreams, the pathways manager or director will support execution or directly execute the organization’s various pathways projects. The position will report to SCORE’s senior director of pathways. Bill Frist, M.D., Chairman and Founder, SCORE The State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) is an independent, nonprofit, and nonpartisan organization founded in 2009 by Sen. Bill Frist, M.D. Our mission is to catalyze transformative change in Tennessee education so that all students can achieve success. We work across the education continuum—from kindergarten to career—through policy, practice, and strategic partnerships. SCORE has three goals that guide our work: • All students receive an excellent public K-12 education., • All students earn a credential or postsecondary degree that prepares them for a career enabling economic independence., • Economically disadvantaged students, students of color, and rural students see improved success across all goals relative to their peers. SCORE is based at 1801 West End Ave. in downtown Nashville. This role is eligible for hybrid work with the expectation of a minimum of 20 hours per week in the office across three days and the balance remote. For more information on SCORE, please visit . KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Portfolio Management: At the manager level, this role will: • Support the execution of a portfolio of pathway-related projects across policy, research, communications, and strategic partnerships, ensuring timely and high-quality execution and tactical support., • Set goals and develop workplans using project management skills to advance specific initiatives. At the director level, this role will: • Manage a portfolio of pathway-related projects across policy, research, communications, and strategic partnerships, ensuring timely and high-quality execution and tactical support., • Delegate roles, as appropriate., • Execute strong project management skills to maximize project success within the pathways portfolio. Strategy Support At the manager level, this role will: • Support the design, execution, and monitoring of SCORE’s strategy to strengthen and launch education-to-workforce pathways aligned to SCORE’s impact credentials framework. At the director level, this role will: • Provide strategic thought partnership to the senior director of pathways in developing the pathways strategy., • Execute and monitor SCORE’s strategy to strengthen and launch education-to-workforce pathways aligned to SCORE’s impact credentials framework. Stakeholder Engagement At the manager level, this role will: • Cultivate key relationships with internal team members and, if necessary, external partners to complete the work. At the director level, this role will: • Build relationships with stakeholders in K-12, higher education, workforce development, industry, philanthropy, and government, as necessary, to support the work., • Make important connections between stakeholder groups and SCORE’s pathways portfolio. Research, Data, and Policy Advocacy At the manager level, this role will: • Support research and, as appropriate, data analysis to inform SCORE’s strategy., • Collaborate with SCORE’s policy and research teams to advance strategic initiatives that improve education-to-career opportunities for students. At the director level, this role will: • Lead analysis of education-to-work research and data., • Recommend actions for portfolio of work based on data and research. Produce public resources to advance SCORE’s pathways portfolio., • Execute best practice policy actions, in concert with SCORE’s policy and research teams, that will narrow the gap between education and opportunity for students., • Translate SCORE’s goals and strategy into policy and research initiatives. Communication At the manager level, this role will: • Clearly communicate project goals, progress, and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders., • Participate actively in portfolio and project discussions to advance the work. At the director level, this role will: • Deploy a range of group engagement skills (e.g., facilitation, presentation, synchronous and asynchronous feedback) to move a project forward., • Adapt communication to the needs of the audience., • Exhibit strong writing skills to develop internal memos and public products related to pathways work. CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS Experience: For this position, at least 1-3 years of experience in education, workforce development, policy, or a related field is expected for a manager role, and 3-8 years of experience for a director role. For the manager level, experience in a related field is expected; for a director level, experience managing cross-sector portfolios of work across education and workforce development is preferred. Expertise: Any applicant for the position should have an understanding of impact credentials or credentials of value, dual enrollment, work-based learning, apprenticeships, and other policy incentives that narrow the gap between education and workforce preparedness for students. A manager level applicant should have a basic understanding of education-to-workforce pathways components, including postsecondary systems, policies, and practices such as high school to postsecondary pathways and postsecondary success. A director level applicant should have a strong, in-depth knowledge base on these topics and other connected policies and practices. Collaboration: For both the manager and director levels, candidates should have success in working with diverse stakeholders to drive shared outcomes and success. An openness to giving and receiving constructive feedback to advance projects is required. Learning: For both the manager and director levels, candidates should hold an ability to learn with depth and quickly and be ready to lean into a broad portfolio of work with openness and excitement. Skills: Candidates should bring strong communication, strategic thinking, and organizational skills. Additionally, a strong candidate will be able to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities, as well as have experience in project management, report and memo writing, and effective communication strategies. For the manager level, the expectation is that these skills will support the execution of SCORE’s pathways portfolio. The expectation at the director level is that this individual will be able to demonstrate these skills to lead execution on various projects.
