We are currently seeking a Stick Welder (Coil Shop) with strong free-hand SMAW experience who takes pride in producing quality structural and pressure-related welds. Position Overview: As a Stick Welder (SMAW) in our Coil Shop, you will perform free-hand welding on structural and pressure-related components that support HVAC equipment manufacturing. This role is ideal for welders who are confident welding without fixtures, can work in all positions, and understand how weld quality impacts product performance. What Youll Do: Welding & Production (Stick / SMAW) • Perform free-hand Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on carbon steel and alloy steel components., • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions based on part design and production needs., • Select and use appropriate electrodes (e.g., E6011, E7018) for material type, thickness, and joint configuration., • Set up and adjust welding equipment, including:, • Amperage settings, • Polarity (AC/DC), • Electrode size and type, • Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and work instructions., • Measure, layout, and prepare materials by cutting, grinding, beveling, and cleaning prior to welding., • Perform free-hand fit-up and tack welding to ensure proper alignment and joint integrity., • Adjust welding techniques based on joint position, material condition, and environmental factors., • Operate fabrication equipment such as grinders, band saws, and pipe cutting/threading equipment., • Support production schedules while maintaining consistent weld quality. Quality & Documentation: • Ensure welds meet company quality standards, approved WPS, and applicable codes., • Perform visual inspections for defects such as:, • Slag inclusions, • Cracks, • Undercut, • Lack of fusion, • Properly remove slag between weld passes., • Verify weld size, bead profile, and dimensional accuracy using measuring tools., • Accurately charge labor time to work orders., • Complete production, inspection, and rework documentation as required., • Participate in welding qualifications, skill assessments, and re-certification activities., • Report quality concerns or defects immediately to supervision. Maintenance & Safety: • Follow all welding safety, PPE, and environmental requirements., • Inspect welding machines, leads, electrode holders, and grounding connections prior to use., • Perform basic preventive maintenance, including replacing damaged cables and worn components., • Properly store and handle electrodes, including maintaining E7018 rods in heated ovens., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area free of slag buildup and trip hazards., • Safely handle hot materials and slag using proper tools and PPE., • Operate overhead cranes and lifting devices as required., • Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment issues immediately.
