Job Description Terminal Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Maintenance Hiring Manager - Rodney Fields The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and diagnostics on a variety of heavy equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety. Equipment includes but is not limited to cranes, excavators, dozers, forklifts, telehandlers, air compressors, light towers, front-wheel loaders, UTVs, and trucks (½ ton and larger). This position requires effective communication, adherence to safety protocols, and timely completion of maintenance tasks to minimize operational downtime. Roles: • Preventive Maintenance and Inspections: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure all equipment is functioning optimally. Inspect equipment usage and maintenance checklists periodically to identify potential issues and prevent equipment breakdowns., • Troubleshooting and Repairs: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct equipment deficiencies using proper techniques. Remove, repair, or replace parts, major assemblies, subassemblies, and components as needed to restore equipment to operational status., • System Adjustments and Testing: Work on various systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, HVAC, fuel, emissions, steering, hydraulics, and pneumatics. Conduct test drives and make adjustments to verify equipment performance, ensuring compliance with safety and engine standards., • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain detailed equipment records, annotating services and repairs on work orders. Adhere to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and safety protocols, ensuring compliance with safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)., • Collaboration and Training: Maintain effective communication with team members to coordinate maintenance and repair activities. Participate in safety training, supervisor training, and other skill development opportunities to enhance professional growth and contribute to cross-functional teamwork., • Core Values: Embody and encourage all core values of the company in all decision making and actions. Responsibilities: • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure all equipment is functioning optimally., • Inspect equipment usage and maintenance checklists periodically to identify potential issues., • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct equipment deficiencies using proper techniques., • Generate parts requisitions for necessary repairs., • Work on systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, HVAC, fuel, emissions, steering, hydraulics, and pneumatics., • Remove, repair, or replace parts, major assemblies, subassemblies, and components as needed., • Conduct test drives and make adjustments to controls and systems to verify performance., • Provide recommendations to prevent equipment breakdowns and improve system reliability., • Perform adjustments and alignments, including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, brakes, and traction units., • Ensure compliance with engine, safety, and combustion control standards during testing., • Maintain detailed equipment records, annotating services and repairs on work orders., • Adhere to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and safety protocols., • Participate in all scheduled Safety and Health Training programs., • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain awareness of Safety Data Sheets., • Maintain effective communication with team members to coordinate maintenance and repair activities., • Attend and actively participate in daily, weekly, and monthly meetings or standdowns., • Assist other departments as needed and contribute to cross-functional teamwork., • Participate in supervisor training and skill development opportunities., • Assist in other areas of business as required., • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor. Expectations: • Complete 100% of scheduled preventive maintenance tasks on all heavy equipment, ensuring accuracy and timeliness., • Consistently document all maintenance activities, inspections, and findings in the appropriate systems or records., • Proactively identify potential equipment issues during preventive maintenance to minimize unexpected breakdowns., • Diagnose and repair equipment issues with minimal downtime, maintaining a target of 95% first-time repair accuracy., • Demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems., • Ensure proper functionality of repaired equipment by conducting test drives or operational tests before returning to service., • Adhere to all company and regulatory safety standards, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and PPE protocols, with zero safety violations., • Participate actively in all required safety training and emergency response drills., • Report and address all unsafe conditions, ensuring that corrective actions are taken promptly., • Contribute to achieving operational targets for equipment uptime by minimizing unplanned downtime., • Maintain effective communication with supervisors, operators, and team members to coordinate maintenance and repair activities., • Attend and actively participate in daily, weekly, or monthly team meetings, sharing insights and progress updates., • Complete all required paperwork, work orders, and equipment records accurately and on time., • Maintain an organized and detailed log of parts requisitions and inventory usage to streamline future repairs., • Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, attend training sessions, and stay updated on advancements in heavy equipment maintenance., • Consistently embody the company’s Core Values in day-to-day responsibilities and interactions with others., • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality, being available for on-call duties as needed. Qualifications and Education Requirements: • High school diploma or GED required., • Technical certifications in heavy equipment maintenance are a plus., • 10+ years of experience and/or relevant certifications in heavy equipment maintenance and repair., • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems., • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously., • Proficient in reading and interpreting parts manuals, drawings, diagrams, and schematics., • Familiarity with Lock Out Tag Out procedures, Safety Data Sheets, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)., • Must have or obtain a TWIC card., • Valid U.S. driver’s license required., • Must pass all pre-employment testing, including drug screening, physical examination, and background check. Physical Demands: • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods., • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds., • Use of hands for typing and operating office equipment., • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations.
