Job Description Job Title: Mechanic Shift: 1st Pay: up to $26 Job Description The Vessel Fleet Mechanic maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots a diverse fleet of heavy equipment, including marine vessels, industrial machinery, and support vehicles. This first-shift role focuses on ensuring the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of all equipment by performing inspections, preventative maintenance, and complex mechanical repairs. The position requires strong hands-on mechanical expertise, the ability to work efficiently with a variety of tools and diagnostic systems, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship in a dynamic environment. Responsibilities • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on vessels and fleet equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation., • Diagnose mechanical issues using schematics, diagnostic tools, software, and technical manuals., • Repair and overhaul engines, electrical systems, transmissions, hydraulics, suspension systems, and other mechanical components., • Service and repair heavy machinery, including tugboats and other marine vessels., • Operate power tools and hand tools safely and efficiently to complete repair and maintenance tasks., • Troubleshoot electrical systems, including performing diagnostics and soldering tasks as needed., • Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities meet safety standards and comply with applicable industry regulations., • Keep detailed and accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts and materials used., • Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians when required, sharing best practices and technical knowledge., • Stay current with industry advancements and new vessel and equipment technologies, incorporating new methods where appropriate., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained. Essential Skills • Proven mechanic experience with heavy equipment operation and vessel maintenance., • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience working on marine engines and marine repair., • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using schematics, diagnostic tools, and technical manuals., • Knowledge and practical experience with diesel engines, diesel equipment, and similar industrial machinery., • Experience repairing and maintaining hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, suspension systems, and related components., • Ability to safely and effectively use a wide range of hand tools and power tools., • Capability to operate forklift trucks and other heavy machinery confidently., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings., • Solid understanding of safety standards and industry regulations related to vessel and heavy equipment maintenance. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Familiarity with fabrication and welding equipment, including the ability to perform basic welding tasks., • Experience working with schematics for electrical and mechanical systems., • Knowledge of HVAC systems as they relate to vessel and equipment maintenance., • Prior service technician experience in industrial or marine environments., • Experience working in a shipyard, marine construction, or heavy industrial setting., • Strong recordkeeping skills for documenting maintenance activities and parts usage., • Willingness to learn and stay up-to-date with new vessel technologies and industry advancements. Work Environment The role is based in a full-service shipyard dedicated to new vessel and barge construction, fabrication, maintenance, and repairs. The facility is state-of-the-art and includes a 900-ton mobile Travelift, extensive fabrication and repair capabilities, and significant waterfront access along the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. The shipyard features approximately 2,000 linear feet of waterfront at the main facility, with an additional 3,800 linear feet of waterfront available nearby. Work is performed primarily on the first shift in an industrial marine environment, involving heavy equipment, tugboats, and other vessels. The setting is hands-on and tool-intensive, with frequent use of power tools, hand tools, forklifts, and heavy machinery in and around active dock, yard, and shop areas. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cleveland, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $54080.00/hr.
