Job Description POSITION: Journalism Apprentice - Pittsburgh Media Partnership Newsroom DEPARTMENT: Center for Media Innovation REPORTS TO: Director, Pittsburgh Media Partnership & Assistant Director, Center for Media Innovation PRIMARY FUNCTION: A journalist who has a demonstrated passion for daily reporting and local news, who can develop sources, recognize news as it happens, meet deadlines, and adeptly navigate challenges to help deliver the news daily with an emphasis on explaining the impact of issues and decisions for residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania. QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: • Recent college graduate whose experience should demonstrate an ability to be employed as a reporter in newsroom, preferably covering government, education, or a combination., • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop stories that do not involve covering events and meetings, • An ideas person with the ability to "think outside the box"., • A minimum of five written clips published by a news outlet and professional experience, including student media, demonstrating a depth and range of reporting, • Demonstrated self-starter who recognizes news as it happens and can develop story ideas, • Ability to quickly locate primary sources to report out stories on deadline, • Experience cultivating sources and developing relationships in a new beat area, • Creativity and sound judgement, • Willingness to work outside of regular business hours, • Multimedia experience creating videos and photographs, • Knowledge of southwestern Pennsylvania's political, social, and economic landscape preferred, • Two or more strong recommendations supporting the applicant, • Ability to pass a criminal background check for working with and alongside minors. QUALIFICATIONS: Must Haves: * Bachelor’s degree in visual communications, video production or related broadcast field from an accredited institution, or mass communications specialist with Defense Information School (DINFOS) accreditation or (4) four years of active duty experience as a photo journalist. * Three (3) years of experience in the last seven (7) years providing scriptwriting, caption writing, video editing, videography, video producing and still photography services in a public affairs/corporate communications environment. * Experience with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. * Experience with Adobe Photoshop CS 4/5/6, Adobe Premier Video Editing, PC and iOS operating systems, digital video conversion from one file format to another. * Possess professional writing skills and verbal communications skills. * Have the ability to effectively organize and track tasks. Job DescriptionThe American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) seeks a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented full-time Immigrants’ Rights Investigator to help monitor, investigate and document immigrant detention and removal activity across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Immigrants’ Rights Investigator’s work will support potential impact litigation to address egregious and systemic violations of civil, constitutional and human rights. This position involves tracking and investigating government agencies engaged in immigration enforcement, including state, county, local and federal law enforcement. The Immigrants’ Rights Investigator will collaborate with allied coalition partners across the state as well as ACLU and affiliated lawyers. This fulltime position requires fluency in Spanish and a willingness to travel throughout the state. It is funded for one year, with likelihood of extension. Applicants can choose work in either our Philadelphia or Pittsburgh office.
