We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Consultant in Children and Young People's Emergency Medicine to join a friendly, dynamic and forward-thinking Children's Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. NUH is a Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands, with a dedicated Children and Young People's Emergency Department based within Nottingham Children's Hospital. We are looking for a team player with a passion for delivering high quality, compassionate care to children and young people, who will contribute to our ambition to develop one of the leading Children's Emergency Departments in the UK, delivering excellent care without exception. We seek candidates with excellent clinical, communication and leadership skills, whose primary focus is safe, effective and child‑centred emergency care. You must be committed to supporting education, research, quality improvement and health promotion, all of which are central to our service and future development. The successful candidate will be supported by a senior mentor during their first year and given protected time to develop special interests aligned to departmental and Children's Hospital priorities. You will contribute to the Children and Young People's Emergency Department consultant clinical rota, providing senior clinical leadership on the shop floor and taking responsibility for the assessment and management of acutely unwell and injured children and young people. This includes leadership of paediatric resuscitation and major trauma, working closely with the wider Children's Hospital and Major Trauma Centre teams. You will be expected to demonstrate effective leadership across the multidisciplinary team and play an active role in the education, supervision and development of doctors in training, advanced clinical practitioners, nurses and other learners within the department. You will contribute to clinical governance activity, including audit, quality improvement, incident review and service development. All consultants are expected to be GCP certified and to actively support recruitment to research studies within the department. Non‑shop‑floor duties are integral to the successful running of a busy Children's Emergency Department. There are a range of opportunities to contribute to the leadership and governance of CYPED and the Children's Hospital, including involvement in education, research, service improvement and departmental development. You will be encouraged and supported, with protected time, to develop specialist interests aligned to departmental strategy and the wider priorities of Nottingham Children's Hospital. The post holder will work as a Consultant in Children and Young Peoples Emergency Medicine within the dedicated Children and Young Peoples Emergency Department (CYPED) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The role involves providing senior clinical leadership for children and young people presenting with a full range of emergency and urgent conditions, including those requiring resuscitation and major trauma care. The post holder will contribute to the CYPED consultant rota, delivering direct clinical care across a range of shifts, and will take responsibility for the overall management of patients under their care. This includes acting as Consultant in Charge, leading paediatric resuscitation and trauma calls, supervising junior medical staff and advanced practitioners, and supporting safe, timely decision making across the department. The consultant will work closely with colleagues across Nottingham Children’s Hospital and the wider Trust to ensure high‑quality, coordinated care. As part of a Major Trauma Centre, the post holder will be expected to lead the care of paediatric major trauma patients and contribute to trauma governance, audit and training. The role requires effective leadership within a large multi‑professional team, promoting a culture of safety, learning and continuous improvement. The post holder will take an active role in clinical governance activities, including quality improvement projects, audit, incident investigation, complaint review and service development. All consultants are expected to maintain Good Clinical Practice certification and to actively support recruitment and delivery of research studies within the Emergency Department, working closely with the department’s established research teams. Education and training are core components of the role. The post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical supervision and mentorship of doctors in training, advanced clinical practitioners, nurses and other learners. There are opportunities to develop a formal education portfolio in collaboration with the University of Nottingham and departmental education leads. Non‑clinical duties include participation in departmental meetings, governance forums and service development work within CYPED and the Children’s Hospital. The post holder will be encouraged and supported, through job planning and SPA time, to develop specialist interests aligned with departmental strategy, education, research, quality improvement or leadership. Full GMC registration. Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register as CCT in Paediatric Emergency Medicine OR CCT in Emergency Medicine with PEM sub‑specialty training OR CCT in general paediatrics with substantial PEM experience. Qualifications / Development as follows: • MRCPCH, FRCEM or equivalent, • ATLS, APLS or equivalent, • Evidence of Level3 Safeguarding Children, • Higher professional degree or qualification or training, • Teaching, Education & Research: higher degree or qualification in healthcare education, • Higher degree or qualification in research methodology, • Higher degree or qualification in quality improvement, • Original research publications, • Management skills: knowledge of the attributes of effective leaders and high‑performing teams, • Knowledge of the place of the ED in the wider NHS and the Urgent and Emergency Care Pathway, • Ability to develop, present and operationalise ideas for service development/delivery, • Evidence of being involved with a significant change management programme, • Ability to lead teams and delegate appropriately, • Higher degree or other qualification in leadership and management, • Minimum of7 years post‑graduation experience, • Able to communicate with children of all ages, • Able to communicate empathically with children and their families, • Effective team leader in paediatric emergency medicine situations, • Specific training or qualification in communication skills, • Specific training or qualification in patient safety and/or human factors, • Able to work flexibly in a changing health service, • Able to use the Trust’s IT support systems, • Team player, resilient, independent worker, • Works well under pressure, • Patient, tactful, diplomatic, • Knowledge of GCP and research recruitment Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) was established in2006 and is one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, providing services to over 2.5 million residents of Nottingham.
