Managing Director – Utility-Scale Renewable Energy Projects Location: Remote / Hybrid – Southern Africa & Nottinghamshire (UK) Salary: £150,000 per annum + Executive Benefits (Company car or allowance, phone, laptop, private healthcare, performance bonus) Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent About the Role My client is seeking an accomplished and visionary Managing Director to oversee the successful delivery of a portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), across the Southern African region. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Managing Director will be responsible for the strategic leadership, financial performance, operational delivery, and stakeholder engagement across all major renewable energy projects. The role will involve leading and mentoring a senior delivery team comprising UK-based Senior Project Managers and highly skilled Electrical Design Engineers, while working closely with on-the-ground delivery teams based in Southern Africa to ensure seamless coordination and execution. The Managing Director will oversee the successful delivery of projects from initial planning, procurement, and logistics through to construction, commissioning, and client handover, driving performance, compliance, and excellence at every stage of the project lifecycle. This is a pivotal leadership position offering the opportunity to shape and deliver high-impact renewable energy projects across Southern Africa, contributing directly to the region’s clean energy transition and the company’s long-term strategic growth. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Delivery Oversight · Provide overall strategic direction and leadership for the planning, execution, and delivery of large-scale solar PV and BESS projects across Southern Africa. · Develop and implement project delivery strategies aligned with corporate goals, ensuring scalability, cost efficiency, and operational success. · Lead, mentor, and manage a senior technical team including Senior Project Managers and highly skilled Electrical Design Engineers, while coordinating closely with Africa-based delivery teams to ensure cohesive and effective execution. · Translate company vision and growth objectives into actionable project plans and measurable performance targets. Project Governance, Reporting & Compliance · Establish and oversee robust governance structures to ensure alignment with Scope 12 standards, regulatory frameworks, and contractual obligations. · Implement comprehensive reporting frameworks to monitor progress, quality, safety, financial performance, and risk across all projects. · Provide detailed and regular reporting to the CEO and Board, including project dashboards, budget updates, risk assessments, schedule forecasts, and strategic recommendations. · Oversee change control processes to effectively manage variations, delays, and scope adjustments. Financial Management & Commercial Oversight · Take full accountability for the financial performance of all projects, including budgeting, forecasting, cost control, cash flow, and profitability. · Approve and oversee procurement strategies, supplier contracts, and major expenditure to ensure best value and timely delivery. · Support business development and bid teams in evaluating new opportunities, reviewing commercial proposals, and shaping pricing strategies. · Identify and implement cost-saving measures and value engineering solutions without compromising safety or quality. Operations, Logistics & Supply Chain Coordination · Oversee end-to-end logistics and supply chain operations for free-issue and procured equipment (panels, inverters, batteries, cabling, switchgear, etc.) across multiple sites. · Ensure seamless coordination of transport, customs clearance, warehousing, and on-site delivery aligned with project schedules. · Build and manage strong relationships with suppliers, logistics partners, and subcontractors to support reliable and cost-effective operations. Health, Safety, Quality & Risk Management · Champion a strong health, safety, and environmental (HSE) culture across all operations, ensuring compliance with legislation and international best practices. · Oversee the development, implementation, and auditing of HSE policies, procedures, and site practices. · Lead proactive risk management, identifying, analysing, and mitigating risks related to cost, schedule, quality, and safety. · Ensure robust incident reporting, lessons learned, and continuous improvement processes are embedded across the organisation. Client, Stakeholder & Regulatory Engagement · Act as the senior point of contact for all client relationships, ensuring expectations are met and exceeded throughout the project lifecycle. · Lead client reporting, progress meetings, and milestone reviews, ensuring transparency and trust at every stage. · Represent the company with regulatory bodies, investors, partners, and government agencies, maintaining strategic relationships and ensuring compliance with permitting and licensing requirements. · Contribute to business development by supporting proposals, client presentations, and strategic partnerships. About You Requirements: · Proven leadership experience at Director or Senior Management level within the renewable energy, power generation, or infrastructure sectors. · Demonstrable track record of delivering large-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects, ideally across multiple geographies. · Strong commercial acumen with extensive experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial governance, and strategic planning. · Exceptional leadership, organisational, and communication skills with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and inspire high performance. · Deep understanding of project delivery frameworks, Scope 12 installation requirements, health & safety standards, and regulatory compliance. · Experience managing complex stakeholder relationships and acting as the senior interface with clients and partners. · Willingness to travel internationally and attend project sites as required.
