Job DescriptionSafety & Workers' Compensation Manager The Safety & Workers' Compensation Manager is responsible for administering and overseeing the organization's workers' compensation and safety programs. This role focuses on reducing risk exposure, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing claims and costs, and promoting a safe work environment through proactive risk management, training, and collaboration with leadership and external partners. Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Identified, evaluated, controlled, and minimized organizational exposure to loss related to workplace injuries and incidents., • Administered a self-insured workers' compensation program, including oversight of lost-time and medical-only claims, case management, and coordination with injured employees, supervisors, and third-party administrators, ensuring compliance with applicable state statutes and regulations., • Analyzed workers' compensation claims data to identify trends, root causes, and prevention opportunities, and recommended training and risk mitigation strategies to reduce injuries and associated costs., • Reviewed injury and incident reports and ensured timely processing of medical bills and disability benefits in coordination with claims administrators., • Maintained comprehensive records for incidents involving third parties and managed correspondence related to reimbursement, approval, denial, and settlement of medical services, wage loss, and awards., • Partnered with third-party administrators to review documentation and determine continuation or cessation of medical and disability benefits; authorized payments upon receipt of appropriate documentation., • Advised leadership and management on workers' compensation policies and procedures, recommended updates as needed, and monitored effectiveness on an ongoing basis., • Evaluated organizational financial risk related to workers' compensation and safety programs and provided recommendations to improve outcomes., • Collaborated with departments to manage workers' compensation risk, develop department-specific risk management plans, and establish short- and long-term safety and cost-control priorities., • Identified, procured, and managed external services to support workers' compensation and safety initiatives; reviewed contract terms and advised management on appropriate provisions., • Developed, monitored, and managed the workers' compensation program budget and expenditures., • Conducted or coordinated investigations of workplace injuries, serious incidents, and fatalities, and communicated findings to appropriate management and leadership., • Supported review and monitoring of high-cost or precedent-setting claims in coordination with assigned staff., • Assisted with cost-control initiatives, continuous improvement efforts, and cross-functional committees as needed., • Coordinated and supported safety training programs across departments., • Served as the organizational subject matter expert for workers' compensation and workplace safety matters. Minimum Qualifications, • Bachelor's degree in human resources, industrial relations, psychology, public administration, communications, or a related field, with at least three years of human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience., • Five years of professional workers' compensation experience in a comparably complex organization, preferably within the public sector., • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees and leadership at all levels., • Working knowledge of insurance contract language, underwriting principles, and claims processing practices., • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, evaluate, and improve workers' compensation and safety programs., • Proven skill in anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazardous conditions and work practices., • Experience reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting injury and incident data to identify trends, ensure data accuracy, evaluate classification methods, and initiate investigations., • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and customer service skills., • Proficiency with computer hardware and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and networked file systems., • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively to achieve departmental and organizational objectives., • Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, reports, budgets, and other technical and administrative documents.
