Job Description The Village of Palatine Department of Public Works is seeking an... Electrician This position performs a variety of tasks at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures on water pumping stations, sewer lift stations, Village-owned buildings and equipment. The Electrician is primarily assigned to the Utilities Division, but is expected to assist in others divisions as directed and works regularly with the Facilities Division to assist with facility and equipment maintenance and repair. This position also performs a variety of non-electrical semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems; public streets; and the urban forest. Job Description: Essential job functions include, but are not limited to: • Installs, inspects, maintains, diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and equipment, including motors, controllers, pumps, fuses, circuit breakers, light fixtures, fans, switches, outlets, ballasts, panels, conduit, wiring, generators and sensors., • Performs preventative maintenance tasks on electrically operated systems, equipment and devices., • Tests electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters and oscilloscopes., • Maintains and replaces beacon lights on top of elevated water tanks., • Maintains inventory of parts, supplies and materials., • Obtains quotes and oversees contracted projects to ensure contract compliance and customer satisfaction., • Updates the Village's GIS inventory of water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer infrastructure and street lighting., • Maintains the water supply and distribution system, including inspection, repair and replacement of water mains, well and pump stations, fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes, b-boxes and elevated and ground storage tanks. Collects and prepares drinking water samples and reports for regulatory testing and compliance., • Maintains the sanitary and storm sewer systems, including inspection, repair and replacement of sewer mains, lift stations, retention and detention basins, inlets, catch basins, manholes and culverts. Performs sewer inspections, televising and flushing., • Maintains the creek system, including inspections, clearing obstructions and outfall and erosion repairs., • Repairs and replaces concrete curbs, sidewalks and driveways, including digging, grading, setting forms and finishing., • Monitors, operates and troubleshoots SCADA system to control water and wastewater systems., • Maintains and installs water meters and performs water shut offs and turn-ons., • Locates underground utilities in response to J.U.L.I.E. requests., • Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment. Reports malfunctions to supervisor., • Assists with the preparations and tear down/cleanup for events, festivals and special functions., • Assists with snow plowing and ice control operations., • Clears roads and sidewalks and assists with traffic control during hazardous weather or other conditions, including floods and storms., • Maintains cleanliness of work rooms, shops, vehicle and storage areas, vehicles and equipment. When assigned to the Facilities Division: • Inspects, maintains and repairs street and parking lot lights, traffic signals, and ground faults., • Performs or oversees preventative maintenance, inspection and repair of HVAC, mechanical, alarm and plumbing systems at Village facilities., • Performs or oversees inspection, maintenance and repair of buildings, including roofs, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, locks and hardware, elevators, garage doors and miscellaneous building equipment., • Inspects, maintains, repairs and replaces appliances, including washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and various types of pumps., • Performs building alterations, including moving and repairing furniture and equipment, light fixture replacement and painting. Qualifications: • Ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy-duty trucks, aerial trucks, lifts, end loaders, backhoes, excavating equipment, televising cameras, sewer jetters, forklifts, hand and power tools, electrical testing devices and instruments, and requires the ability to maintain and repair complex equipment and machinery., • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade; principles of electricity and basic electronics and their application; and the National Electrical Code and its application., • Ability to learn and use GIS, SCADA, Microsoft Office Suite and most common business software programs., • Ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort with an emphasis on climbing and balancing which also involves stooping, crouching, and lifting, pushing and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, 20 to 50 pounds, and may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 125 pounds., • Position is performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions, under fluctuating and extreme temperatures and weather conditions, with some exposure to noise, fumes, chemicals, oils, electrical current, heights and confined spaces., • Ability to work in a team environment, follow safe work practices, communicate verbally and in writing, and demonstrate excellence in customer service., • Ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as assigned. Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day. On call work is assigned by rotation amongst selected employees, which includes all of the Utilities Division., • Must be eligible for employment in the U.S. and pass a pre-employment background check and medical and drug screening (including cannabis). Education, Experience and Licenses: • High school diploma or equivalent is required., • Associate of Applied Science degree in electrical or electronics engineering technology, completion of an electrical or electronics trade school program, or completion of a registered electrical or electronics apprenticeship program is required., • Minimum of three years of experience in the electrical field as a journeyman level electrician, preferably in a municipal setting, is required., • Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Class C Drinking Water Operator Certification is preferred., • Possess a valid Illinois Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements, or have the ability to obtain a commercial learner's permit within two months of hire and CDL within six months of hire. Salary: Hiring rate: $35.88 per hour. Full range: $35.88 through $51.98 per hour. Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, plus required overtime. Employment Duration: Full-time, non-exempt position.
