Job DescriptionSolar Field Service Technician - Traveling Role Job Title: Solar Field Research Technician (National Travel Role)Job Type - FULL TIME (Non-Exempt) Salary: $75,000-$85,000 (DOE) + Per Diem & Overtime Full-Time | National Travel Required (Up to 80%) Candidate can be located anywhere with the US + but will be required to travel nationally. Position Overview The Solar Field Research Technician supports research and development efforts for solar racking and tracking systems through hands-on testing, field trials, and prototype fabrication. This is a highly practical, field-based role ideal for candidates with a background in skilled trades or construction who are interested in learning about solar installation and product development. This position offers exposure to new product development, technical testing, and long-term system monitoring while working closely with engineering and research teams. The role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn, grow technical skills, and advance as experience is gained. Key Responsibilities • Perform, measure, and document testing activities to support research objectives and project deliverables, • Conduct field trials and report results to support the transition of R&D concepts into commercial products, • Collect technically sound data and provide timely reporting to the engineering research team, • Assist in the preparation, assembly, and modification of test fixtures, rigs, and test setups, • Fabricate and assemble prototype racking components for testing purposes, • Construct solar racking systems accurately according to drawings, specifications, and instructions, • Monitor, maintain, and repair long-term testing installations as required, • Document and report observed damage or performance issues during testing, • Track inventory of incoming test samples and materials, • Track usage and movement of test materials and equipment across sites, • Communicate effectively with cross-functional team members to maintain workflow efficiency, • Maintain safe working conditions for self and team members at all times, • Support management with task completion, scheduling, and resource requests, • Comply with all OSHA, job site, and construction safety policies, • Travel independently or with management to testing and project sites across the U.S. as required Required Skills & Qualifications • Trade school education or equivalent hands-on experience (Bachelor's level preferred but not required), • Background in hands-on trades such as construction, framing, HVAC, automotive, agriculture, or manufacturing, • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately document work and results, • Proficiency with electronic devices (computer, tablet, phone) and programs such as:, • Microsoft Word, • Microsoft Excel, • Adobe Acrobat, • Online file storage systems (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive), • High competency using hand and power tools, including but not limited to:, • Angle grinders, • Band saws, • Drills and impact drivers, • Welders and plasma cutters, • Acetylene torch, • Circular saws and general metal-working tools, • Willingness to learn new skills and accept constructive feedback, • Ability to ask questions and request clarification before proceeding when needed, • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently when required, • Creative problem-solving mindset with a strong focus on safety, • Comfortable working in fast-paced, outdoor, and field-based environments, • High adaptability in cross-functional and cross-discipline teams Preferred Experience • Operating machinery such as forklifts, ATVs, tractors, or similar equipment, • Experience in one or more of the following trade areas:, • HVAC fabrication or fitting, • Gutter installation, • Automotive or collision repair, • Manufacturing or assembly, • Welding or ironworking, • Pipe fitting or plumbing, • Finish carpentry or cabinetry, • Aircraft or aeromechanic work Travel Requirements • Frequent national travel required, • Ability to travel to project and testing sites across the United States, sometimes for extended periods Compensation & Benefits • Competitive annual salary range, • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance, • 401(k) with company matching, • Paid time off and parental leave, • Professional development assistance and tuition reimbursement • For this position, you must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship for a non-immigrant visa.
