Job Description Second Shift Welder and Machinist Job Description This role is responsible for the precise fabrication of mechanical components using a variety of machining and welding processes. The position involves operating machine shop equipment, performing manual metalworking tasks, and collaborating closely with Mechanical Engineers and Designers to determine optimal fabrication methods. The machinist follows established procedures, work instructions, and test protocols while documenting results accurately and maintaining a high standard of quality and safety. Responsibilities • Fabricate mechanical components using a range of machining and fabrication processes in accordance with applicable standards and procedures., • Operate machine shop equipment, including vertical mills, lathes, CNC machines, band saws, shears, press brakes, hydraulic presses, drill presses, and metal saws., • Perform manual metalworking tasks such as cutting, grinding, sanding, filing, and material removal, and apply various solutions as required by the job., • Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and work orders to produce accurate parts and assemblies., • Interface with Mechanical Engineers and Designers to discuss and refine fabrication methods, processes, and design considerations., • Set up, adjust, and operate welding equipment for MIG, TIG, and other welding processes as needed for fabrication work., • Use powered and hand tools safely and effectively to complete machining, fitting, and fabrication tasks., • Follow operational procedures and work instructions, ensuring compliance with quality standards and safety requirements., • Assist with the preparation of reports, documentation, and records, including following test procedures and accurately recording results., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained., • Work independently and as part of a team to meet production schedules and project deadlines., • Comfortably perform work in confined spaces and at heights when required by the project., • Manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and quality., • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions clearly and accurately., • Provide guidance and assistance to new or entry-level employees and, when requested, lead small project teams to achieve defined objectives., • Minimum of 5 years of experience in machining, welding, and fabrication, with strong practical knowledge of related procedures., • Proficiency in operating machine shop equipment, including vertical mills, lathes, CNC machines, band saws, shears, press brakes, hydraulic presses, drill presses, and metal saws., • Hands-on experience with machining and fabrication processes for mechanical components., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel., • Familiarity with AutoCAD for reviewing or working with mechanical designs., • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions clearly., • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously., • Competence in using basic powered and hand tools for metalworking and fabrication., • Physical ability to stand, walk, move, climb, bend, crawl, reach, handle, push, and pull while operating tools and equipment., • Visual ability to focus on items less than 20 inches away (corrected or uncorrected), see in three dimensions, and distinguish all colors., • Eligibility to obtain a Secret security clearance., • Vocational or technical education in machining, welding, or a related technical field., • Experience with GTAW/TIG welding processes., • Experience with GMAW/MIG welding processes., • Background in shop fabrication, including layout, fitting, and assembly., • Experience in steel fabrication and structural fabrication., • Experience in welding fabrication across various structures and components., • AWS certification for various metals., • Experience with fitting and flux core welding processes., • Ability to perform structural work involving complex assemblies and structures., • Active TS/SCI security clearance or other active security clearance (desired but not required). Work Environment The work environment is a hands-on machine shop and fabrication setting that uses a full range of machining and welding technologies. You will regularly operate equipment such as vertical mills, lathes, CNC machines, band saws, shears, press brakes, hydraulic presses, drill presses, metal saws, and various welding machines for MIG, TIG, and other processes. Work involves frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling while using powered and hand tools. Tasks may require working in confined spaces and at heights, and visual acuity is important for close work, depth perception, and color differentiation. The environment emphasizes adherence to established procedures, safety standards, and quality practices while supporting collaboration with engineers, designers, and other skilled trades professionals. Hours and shifts may vary based on project needs, and some assignments require extended travel, including trips out of New Mexico for periods up to nine months Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Albuquerque, NM. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
