Job Overview The Director of Engineering will lead MOTER’s product engineering organization. This role is accountable for the delivery, quality, scalability, and long-term evolution of the company’s software platforms, including cloud services, embedded and edge software, and mobile applications. The Director of Engineering will build, lead, and continuously improve a world-class engineering organization capable of developing and sustaining complex, safety-critical, and data-intensive systems. The role works closely with product management, data science, technical operations, and executive leadership to translate business strategy into clear, executable engineering plans and ensure the consistent, reliable delivery of high-impact outcomes. The Director of Engineering reports to the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Technology Officer. Essential Functions • Lead and scale a multidisciplinary engineering organization supporting cloud, embedded, and mobile software development., • Manage, coach, and mentor engineering managers, technical leads, and individual contributors across multiple teams., • Own engineering execution, including planning, estimation, delivery, quality, and continuous improvement., • Design, implement, and continuously refine modern software development processes using contemporary Agile and DevOps practices., • Establish and apply clear technical standards, architecture governance, and engineering best practices., • Partner with product leadership to align roadmaps, priorities, and delivery commitments with business objectives., • Build and sustain a high-performance engineering culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence., • Lead hiring, onboarding, and talent development efforts to attract, retain, and grow top engineering talent., • Effectively manage a mix of local, remote, and external development teams and vendors., • Drive adoption of modern development tooling, including AI-assisted software development workflows, to improve productivity, quality, and time to delivery., • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field required; Equivalent practical experience may be considered in lieu of a degree., • Proven experience leading and scaling engineering organizations, including multiple teams and management layers., • Demonstrated success delivering large, complex software systems in production environments., • Hands-on technical experience in at least one of the following domains: cloud platforms, embedded or edge software, or mobile application development, with the ability to provide architectural and technical oversight across all., • Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies, tooling, and delivery models., • Experience designing and operating scalable engineering organizations, processes, and operating models that support growth and long-term sustainability., • Proven record of hiring, developing, and retaining senior engineering talent, including managers and technical leaders., • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts and tradeoffs to executive and non-technical stakeholders., • Ability to translate business strategy into executable engineering plans, balancing speed, quality, risk, and technical debt., • Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree preferred., • Experience managing distributed and remote engineering teams, including external development partners and vendors., • Background in connected devices, automotive software, IoT, robotics, or data-intensive platforms., • Experience operating in startup, scale-up, or high-growth environments, including periods of rapid organizational change., • Familiarity with security, privacy, and compliance requirements in modern software systems (e.g., data protection, secure development practices). Office Location • Torrance, CA - Hybrid (Tuesday and Thursday in office). Compensation • For California based hires, the annual salary range is $180,000 - $215,000 depending on experience plus performance-based incentives., • FLSA Job Status is Exempt.
