Job Description Job Title: Small Engine Technician Job Description This role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining fractional horsepower gasoline engines and related equipment used in lawnmowers, garden tractors, and similar machines. You will perform hands-on mechanical work, communicate repair status with internal team members, and ensure all work meets safety and quality standards in a fast-paced service center environment. Responsibilities • Identify problems with fractional horsepower gasoline engines used to power lawnmowers, garden tractors, and similar equipment, and resolve issues in a timely and efficient manner., • Locate the causes of mechanical or electrical trouble by dismantling parts, examining components for defects, and determining appropriate repair methods., • Clean, adjust, replace, or repair parts as needed, following internal guidelines and customer authorizations., • Set up new equipment, perform initial inspections and adjustments, and prepare units for delivery to customers., • Tow a utility trailer, when required, to support equipment service and sales orders., • Communicate daily with the Parts Customer Service Representative and/or Sales Center leadership regarding diagnostics, recommended courses of action, parts needs, and repair status., • Use company-issued tools and handle customer equipment with the utmost care to prevent damage and ensure professional workmanship., • Follow OSHA safety and security procedures at all times, including proper use of lifts and personal protective equipment., • Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple repair orders and prioritizing urgent needs from business customers., • Troubleshoot issues with persistence, applying critical thinking to identify root causes and effective solutions., • Adapt to ever-evolving computer systems, programs, handheld technology, and internal processes to document work and track repairs., • Perform basic mathematical calculations related to measurements, parts, and repair tasks using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals., • Multitask between multiple repair jobs and commit to overtime when necessary to meet deadlines and service commitments., • Maintain composure and a cooperative, team-oriented attitude while working closely with other technicians., • Protect the service center’s reputation by maintaining a high level of quality and awareness of how behind-the-scenes work impacts the customer experience., • Successful completion of a mechanic technical or trade school program, or at least 1 year of mechanic experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience., • Hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain small engines and power equipment., • Ability to tow a utility trailer safely for equipment service and sales-related tasks., • Willingness and ability to acquire Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) industry certifications and maintain manufacturers’ annual updates., • Ownership of a basic set of tools suitable for general engine and power equipment repair (such as drills, wrenches, sockets, and pliers)., • Strong troubleshooting and investigative mindset, with the persistence to identify and resolve complex issues., • Ability to maintain composure and productivity in a fast-paced environment serving business owners with urgent needs., • Dependable, cooperative team player with a strong sense of responsibility and reliability., • Awareness of how technical work and repair quality affect overall customer service and satisfaction., • Aptitude to learn and use evolving computer systems, software programs, and handheld technology for diagnostics and documentation., • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals., • Capability to multitask between multiple repair jobs and work overtime when necessary to meet operational needs., • Physical dexterity, coordination, and steadiness to safely handle tools, parts, and equipment., • Experience working with small engines, including two-cycle, four-cycle, and light diesel engines, is helpful., • Exposure to electrical and hydraulic units used in power equipment is beneficial., • Equipment and Engine Training Certifications (EETC) are highly desirable., • Lead technician experience, preferably with two-cycle and four-cycle certifications and approximately 1–2 years of relevant experience, is advantageous for more senior responsibilities., • Entry-level candidates from mechanic or technical trade schools, or those with related experience such as motorcycle or hydraulic equipment repair, are encouraged to apply., • High school diploma or GED is preferred. Work Environment You will work in a small, collaborative team of approximately five technicians in a service center environment. The role is not customer-facing, allowing you to focus on technical repair and maintenance work. Technicians use standard mechanical tools and equipment, including lifts and personal protective equipment, to support safe and efficient repairs. You are expected to bring your own basic hand tools, such as drills, wrenches, sockets, and pliers, for general engine and power equipment repair tasks. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, with core hours of 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and flexibility to work any 8-hour shift between 5:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Overtime may be required during busy periods to meet service deadlines. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
