Job Description: We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral social science researcher who has expertise in community engaged scholarship, excels in an interdisciplinary team environment, and has strong qualitative and quantitative skill sets. This postdoctoral researcher will play a pivotal role in advancing research on community-based approaches to urban environmental research. The successful candidate will engage across different interdisciplinary projects at the University of Louisville, including a NSF-funded initiative on nature-based climate solutions (ENACTS) and the GreenPrint research project. The ENACTS project uses evidence-based theoretical and conceptual frameworks to drive research on community engagement for effective nature-based solutions (NbS) planning, design, and implementation projects, at the municipal scale. The projects overarching goal is to understand and quantify the influence of NbS on community well-being and to identify design principles and best practices for enhanced health, resilience, economic, and environmental outcomes. The research, based in three cities (Manchester, NH; Providence, RI; and Louisville, KY), focuses on green infrastructure implementation through co-design for these urban landscapes. The GreenPrints project is a decade-long, community-driven initiative aimed at transforming Louisville's downtown area into a vibrant and healthy urban environment through coordinated public and private greening projects. Facilitated by the Louisville Metro government and local foundations, the project involves the UofL Urban Design Studio and environmental health researchers from the UofL Envirome Institute at the School of Medicine. It seeks to identify how different greening strategies impact environmental and health outcomes, creating a replicable, evidence-based Greenprint that other cities can adopt. The initiative includes establishing a partnership charter, ongoing promotion and sharing of project updates, potential follow-on funding opportunities, and data-driven assessments to measure community health impacts. We anticipate the appointee will specialize in community engaged social science research, with an emphasis on superior qualitative methodologies and data analysis, and high proficiency in foundational quantitative data analysis. This person will have excellent communication and data management skills, with an interest in and proven experience working on interdisciplinary teams. Evidence of strong academic writing skills are critical, and experience with applied/public writing and research outputs a plus. Specific research areas of interest may include (but are not limited to) urban environmental change, climate policy, infrastructure, political ecology, urban planning, or community-based scholarship and methods. The appointee will have an opportunity to engage in several ongoing, interdisciplinary projects that involve collaborations across local and global scales. By joining our vibrant and well-connected interdisciplinary teams, the candidate will have opportunities to engage in community-based research methodologies and to coordinate research across interdisciplinary teams; lead career-changing, high-impact publications; mentor graduate and undergraduate students on the project; and develop critical networking connections across a diverse range of institutions involved in the research projects.
