Job Summary As a Data Centre Technician, you will work as part of on-site teams supporting a client environment, responsible for handling day-to-day faults, service requests, and infrastructure support activities. The role covers a broad range of Data Centre operations including structured cabling tasks such as patching, testing, validation, and decommissioning, as well as supporting larger installation projects using specialist systems to ensure data accuracy and integrity. This position requires strong communication skills, a proactive attitude, and a solid understanding of Data Centre environments. You will interact with a range of stakeholders, demonstrating excellent customer service, organisation, and flexibility to meet operational demands. A willingness to take initiative, work collaboratively, and adapt to changing requirements is essential. Reporting to: Project Manager / Data Centre Lead Key Responsibilities Cabling & Hardware Support • Install, terminate, and test copper (Cat6/6A) and fibre optic (singlemode/multimode) cabling in live environments, • Perform patching, termination, and flylead installation in structured infrastructure systems, • Provide 1st and 2nd line fault diagnosis and resolution for structured cabling and network connectivity issues, • Conduct infrastructure testing using industry-standard tools and software, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, • Support Data Centre migrations including provisioning, testing, out-of-hours support, and decommissioning activities Relationship Management • Work directly with end users to diagnose issues and understand requirements, • Liaise with project management teams to ensure delivery against scope, schedule, and quality expectations, • Supervise third-party contractors to ensure compliance with governance and quality standards, • Act as a point of contact for incident response, migration support, and escort duties, • Provide clear technical and non-technical communication across stakeholders Documentation & Reporting • Produce accurate installation records, test results, and certification documentation, • Maintain clear progress updates and end-of-shift reports, • Highlight deviations from design or scope where required, • Ensure all documentation is completed in line with project and client requirements Health & Safety • Comply with all RAMS and site-specific health and safety requirements, • Work safely in accordance with relevant legislation and site procedures, • Take responsibility for personal and team safety during all operational activities, • Follow safe systems of work when operating in high-risk environments such as confined spaces or at height Knowledge Requirements • Understanding of IT network infrastructure and structured cabling systems, • Awareness of copper and fibre testing standards and certification requirements, • Knowledge of health and safety risks in cabling and Data Centre environments, • Familiarity with emerging technologies such as IoT and their impact on infrastructure design, • Understanding of rack, cabinet, and panel installation principles, • Importance of accurate technical documentation and handover processes Skills Required • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), • Competent in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams), • Ability to follow technical instructions and procedures accurately, • Strong numerical and literacy skills for task planning and reporting, • Experience using network and fibre testing equipment (e.g. Fluke, OTDR, network analysers), • Ability to work safely and effectively in high-risk environments, • Strong adherence to health and safety procedures Behaviours • High attention to detail and quality-focused approach, • Self-motivated with strong time management skills, • Proactive problem solver with initiative, • Strong commitment to health, safety, and data integrity, • Flexible approach to working hours, including shift and overtime requirements, • Team-oriented with the ability to work across varied experience levels Qualifications Essential • Valid ECS/CSCS card, • Relevant industry qualification (e.g. CNet CNCI®, CNIT, BICSI Installer Level 2/3 or equivalent), • IPAF certification, • Full driving Licence Desirable • First Aid certification, • GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English Experience Essential • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar Data Centre or structured cabling role, • Experience installing copper and fibre ICT cabling systems, • Understanding of Data Centre environments and operational practices Desirable • Experience with intelligent infrastructure systems, • Exposure to AV, electronic security, IoT, and network architecture environments
