Job Description Position Summary The Executive Director serves as the chief operating officer of the New York Council Navy League, providing strategic leadership to advance the organization's mission and long-term sustainability. Reporting directly to the President and Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads fundraising and donor engagement, cultivates strategic partnerships, supports Board governance, and provides executive oversight of the Council's administration, finances, staff, programs, and implementation of the strategic plan. The Executive Director also provides leadership for marketing, communications, community outreach, and major events while carrying out other responsibilities assigned by the President and Board. Primary Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Organizational Vision • Provide visionary leadership to advance the Council's mission, strategic priorities, and long-term sustainability., • Lead implementation and evaluation of the Board-approved strategic plan and recommend adjustments as organizational needs evolve., • Foster a collaborative, high-performing culture that encourages teamwork, innovation, accountability, and active member engagement., • Represent the Council with military leaders, civic organizations, government agencies, nonprofit partners, corporate stakeholders, and the community., • Ensure the Council operates in accordance with its mission, bylaws, policies, and nonprofit best practices. Fundraising, Development & External Relations • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with annual and long-term organizational goals., • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and planned giving prospects., • Partner with the Board and Development Committee to strengthen fundraising capacity and Board engagement., • Expand strategic partnerships with Navy League National, military commands, corporations, foundations, and community organizations., • Serve as the Council's principal ambassador through public speaking, media relations, marketing, and community outreach. Board Governance & Executive Leadership • Serve as the Board's chief staff advisor by providing strategic recommendations and operational updates., • Work with the President to establish Board and Executive Committee agendas and governance calendars., • Support the work of Board committees including Development, Membership, Finance, Audit, Budget & Risk, Governance, and Nominating., • Serve as liaison with legal counsel and other professional advisors., • Implement Board-approved policies and strategic initiatives. Financial Stewardship & Administration • Develop and administer the annual operating budget in accordance with nonprofit financial management standards., • Oversee financial reporting, cash flow, internal controls, audits, insurance, contracts, and regulatory compliance., • Partner with the Treasurer, bookkeeper, auditor, and Finance Committee to ensure fiscal stewardship and transparency., • Oversee human resources, technology, risk management, and administrative policies., • Recommend staffing, volunteer, and operational resources necessary to achieve strategic objectives. Organizational Leadership, Programs & Membership • Provide executive oversight of staff, programs, membership initiatives, and daily operations through leadership of the Assistant Director., • Establish organizational performance measures and evaluate progress toward strategic, financial, fundraising, membership, and program goals., • Foster membership recruitment, retention, engagement, and volunteer leadership in partnership with the Membership Committee., • Oversee the successful delivery and evaluation of major Council programs and events for mission impact and fiscal responsibility., • Mentor and develop staff while promoting a culture of service, collaboration, accountability, and professional growth. Basic Requirements • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience., • 5+ years of progressive nonprofit leadership including fundraising., • Demonstrated success securing major gifts and sponsorships., • Experience managing budgets, staff, and boards., • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. Preferred Requirements • Master's degree or CFRE credential., • Military, veterans, or maritime nonprofit experience., • Experience with CRM systems, grant development, and capital or endowment campaigns., • Experience leading strategic planning and organizational growth.
