Purpose of the Position The Tactical Athletic Trainer provides onsite injury care, rehabilitation, and returntoduty guidance for Central Indiana public safety professionals. This position focuses on high-quality orthopedic/sports rehabilitation, work-comp care coordination, and proactive injury-prevention education in close collaboration with an onsite strength & conditioning professional and the broader clinical team. Essential Functions Injury Care and Rehabilitation • Provide onsite evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for work-related and private insurance musculoskeletal injuries for law enforcement, fire, and other public safety personnel., • Conduct functional duty assessments and provide clear recommendations regarding return-to-duty, duty modifications, and work restrictions., • Develop and progress individualized, evidence-informed rehabilitation plans tailored to the specific physical demands of public safety work., • Educate patients on injury mechanisms, self-management strategies, and long-term joint and spine health. Program Collaboration and Case Management • Coordinate care with referring physicians, specialists, and other healthcare providers to ensure high-quality, timely, and compliant care for each patient., • Serve as a clinical resource to command staff and agency leadership regarding injury trends, duty readiness, and safe return-to-work planning., • Participate in case review meetings with the strength & conditioning professional and ProTeam leadership to align clinical care with performance and wellness initiatives., • Support workers compensation navigation by providing timely documentation, objective functional information, and clear communication to all stakeholders. Documentation, Data, and Reporting • Document all patient encounters in the electronic medical record system in accordance with professional, legal, and payer standards., • Track key clinical metrics (e.g., time lost, case duration, mechanism of injury, functional outcomes) and assist leadership in using this data to improve programs and services., • Provide regular, concise injury and outcomes reports to the Chief Operations Officer and agency stakeholders to support accountability and continuous improvement. Education, Outreach, and Professional Representation • Provide group and oneonone education on topics such as injury prevention, ergonomics, load management, recovery, and early symptom reporting., • Participate in recruit academy education and in-service sessions for incumbent staff as requested by agency leadership., • Serve as an advocate for ProTeam Tactical Performance, modeling our values of professionalism, respect for public safety culture, and commitment to evidence-informed practice., • Contribute to the development of educational materials, presentations, and resources for public safety personnel. Qualifications Minimum Requirements • Undergraduate or Graduate Athletic Training degree from a CAATE-accredited program., • Minimum of 3 years of outpatient orthopedic and/or sports medicine experience., • Current Athletic Trainer licensure in Indiana or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to start date., • Demonstrated experience managing active, high-demand populations. Preferred Experience • Prior experience working with tactical athletes (military, fire, law enforcement) and/or professional or collegiate athletics., • Familiarity with workers compensation systems and return-to-work coordination., • Experience collaborating with strength & conditioning staff, athletic trainers, or performance coaches. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Clinical and Technical • Strong orthopedic examination and manual therapy skills with the ability to independently manage complex musculoskeletal conditions within state practice guidelines., • Proficiency in designing and progressing individualized home exercise programs and functional return-to-duty preparation., • Ability to interpret functional testing, duty simulations, and strength measures in collaboration with the strength & conditioning professional., • Competence using electronic medical record systems and basic productivity tools for documentation and reporting. Interpersonal and Communication • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with law enforcement and fire service personnel., • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills in both one-on-one and group settings., • Clear and concise written communication skills for clinical documentation, reports, and patient education., • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team that includes strength & conditioning, operations leadership, and agency partners. Professionalism and Critical Thinking • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a varied caseload, prioritize tasks, and work effectively with minimal supervision., • Sound clinical judgment and critical thinking in highstress situations, including managing acute injuries and complex work-comp considerations., • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, and compliance with all applicable regulations and policies., • Commitment to ongoing professional development through courses, mentoring, and engagement with tactical and sports medicine best practices. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions • Medium physical demand role that includes frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying., • Ability to occasionally lift and carry more than 55 lbs and to assist with transfers of equipment and materials as needed., • Functional abilities including visual acuity, speech, hearing, and handeye coordination sufficient to perform evaluations, treatments, and documentation., • Ability to work occasional extended or irregular hours to support training events Patient Load • At ProTeam, we strive to change the way patient care is provided by keeping our care to 1 patient per provider, whenever possible., • Patient volume will vary based on contractual obligations, operational tempo, and injury trends. The Tactical Physical Therapist is expected to manage caseload efficiently while maintaining high standards of care and documentation.
