Job DescriptionJob Title: Inpatient Pharmacist – Night Shift Job Description This inpatient pharmacist role focuses on overseeing all aspects of central drug distribution operations during night shift hours in an acute care hospital setting. The pharmacist ensures safe, accurate, and timely medication therapy by verifying Epic orders, supervising sterile compounding and unit dose dispensing, and coordinating medication delivery to nursing units. The position requires strong clinical judgment, meticulous attention to regulatory standards, and clear, professional communication with healthcare teams and pharmacy technicians. Responsibilities • Oversee all central drug distribution operations during night shift hours, ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient medication dispensing., • Supervise and perform sterile compounding, including IV admixtures and chemotherapy preparations, in accordance with established standards and procedures., • Manage repackaging of oral liquids and oral unit dose dispensing using carousel systems to support accurate patient-specific medication delivery., • Conduct comprehensive Epic order verification to ensure medication therapy is accurate, safe, and clinically appropriate., • Review and verify Epic medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, accurate dosing, optimal dosage form, potential drug interactions, allergies, route and rate of administration, and therapeutic duplications., • Ensure order accuracy by communicating directly and promptly with prescribers or designated practitioners in accordance with departmental policies and procedures., • Coordinate timely medication delivery to nursing units and resolve any issues that may delay patient care., • Provide oversight, direction, and support to pharmacy technicians working in central pharmacy, cleanroom, and carousel areas., • Maintain clear, professional, and courteous communication at all times, demonstrating strong multitasking skills and appropriate phone etiquette., • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards, including USP , , and , in all compounding and handling activities., • Demonstrate a strong understanding of central pharmacy workflows related to Pyxis systems and patient-specific medication filling processes., • Verify orders originating from central pharmacy dispensing carousels, storeroom carousels, and cleanroom production areas for accuracy and completeness., • Provide evidence-based pharmacotherapy recommendations and drug information to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support optimal patient care., • Document clinical interventions in a timely and thorough manner using Epic Ivents., • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and contribute to clinical and operational safety efforts within the pharmacy., • Monitor drug therapy and inventory to help ensure appropriate medication availability and usage, including chemotherapy and other high-risk medications.Essential Skills, • Active Registered Pharmacist license in the state of Illinois., • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree., • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in an inpatient or acute care pharmacy setting., • Experience in inpatient pharmacy operations, including central distribution workflows., • Demonstrated competency in sterile compounding, including IV admixtures and chemotherapy preparation., • Experience with monitoring drug therapy in an acute care environment., • Proficiency with Epic medication order verification and clinical documentation using Epic Ivents., • Working knowledge of Pyxis systems and patient-specific medication filling processes., • Strong understanding of USP , , and regulatory requirements., • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail., • Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills, including strong phone etiquette., • Ability to provide guidance and oversight to pharmacy technicians in a central pharmacy setting.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) pharmacy residency experience is beneficial., • Experience with chemotherapy compounding and handling in a hospital setting., • Familiarity with carousel-based medication dispensing systems for central pharmacy and storeroom operations., • Experience participating in pharmacy quality improvement and safety initiatives., • Strong clinical decision-making skills and comfort providing evidence-based pharmacotherapy recommendations., • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in a fast-paced inpatient environment.Work Environment This position is based in an inpatient pharmacy within a major hospital campus. The role primarily supports night shift operations, working four 10-hour shifts from 9:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with no set days and potential weekend shifts based on departmental needs. The environment includes central pharmacy, storeroom carousel areas, and cleanroom spaces for sterile compounding, including chemotherapy. The pharmacist works extensively with Epic for order verification and documentation, Pyxis systems for automated dispensing, and carousel systems for medication storage and distribution. The setting is fast-paced and highly collaborative, requiring close coordination with nursing units and other clinical teams to ensure timely medication delivery and safe patient care. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Chicago, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
