Job Description Job Title: New Hire Utility Job Description The New Hire Utility role focuses on learning and supporting the operation of equipment in the tube mill and extrusion areas, handling aluminum products, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality. You will start as a Utility employee, rotating through multiple departments to learn machine operation, quality checks, packing, inspection, and material handling before eventually moving into a specific department on a permanent basis. This position requires a strong work ethic, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work collaboratively in a unionized, high‑volume manufacturing environment. Responsibilities • Learn to operate equipment associated with the tube mill and extrusion processes, including extrusion and casting machinery., • Support tube mill operations by moving materials on and off machines using proper lifting techniques and hoists., • Handle aluminum products safely while adhering to all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe job practices., • Assist machine operators with setup, operation, and basic troubleshooting of production equipment., • Perform quality checks, visual inspections, and quality assurance activities to ensure all quality objectives are met., • Report and review any unusual conditions, equipment issues, or quality concerns with lead operators and supervisors., • Carry out packing, labeling, and general production tasks to meet daily production and shipping requirements., • Engage in material handling activities, including loading and unloading materials, and organizing inventory as needed., • Participate in general labor tasks such as cleaning up grease, oil, and other hydraulic fluids as part of routine maintenance and housekeeping., • Work effectively as part of a team, communicating frequently with team members and management to achieve daily production goals., • Follow all union-related guidelines regarding shift movement, flexibility, and job bidding, whether or not you are a union member., • Demonstrate a willingness to cross-train in multiple departments and learn all aspects of the production process., • Complete all required documentation accurately, including production records, quality forms, and any other job-related paperwork., • Adhere to all safety rules, including working around large, complex, and sometimes older industrial machinery, and using provided personal protective equipment (PPE)., • 1–2 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or material handling environment., • Hands-on experience in general production support, assembly line work, or machine/assembly operations., • Basic machine operating or machine operation experience, with an understanding of production processes and workflow., • Experience with material handling, including loading, moving, and organizing materials in a manufacturing environment., • Ability to perform quality control, quality checks, and visual inspection to ensure product meets specifications., • Comfort working with hand tools and operating production equipment such as press machines and other manufacturing machinery., • Ability and willingness to work all three rotating shifts (7–3, 3–11, 11–7) as required by tube mill operations., • Capability to perform frequent lifting of 15–50 lbs and occasional assisted lifting of up to 100 lbs., • Ability to step over obstacles, climb on and off machinery, work with and around motorized equipment, bend, push, and pull objects in excess of 15 lbs, and pull objects up to 100 lbs., • Strong verbal and written communication skills for completing documentation and communicating with team members and supervisors., • Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning how raw materials move through the production process from start to finished product., • Willingness to work in a union environment and comply with union-related guidelines for shifts and job bidding., • Ability and interest in learning to operate a forklift if not already experienced., • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment involving extrusion, tube mill, or metals production., • Experience with inventory tasks and basic manufacturing process documentation., • Familiarity with inspection, quality assurance, and quality control processes in a production setting., • Comfort working around grease, oil, and hydraulic fluids and performing related cleanup as part of normal operations., • Openness to cross-training across multiple departments and progressing into more specialized roles over time., • Demonstrated integrity, strong work ethic, and alignment with a values-driven, safety-focused culture. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Chesterfield, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.81 - $20.81/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
