Onsite work at customer site bonus allowance for every 4 days onsite £100. e.g. every 10 weeks onsite would constitute an extra £1000 earned Must hold a full UK driving licence We are looking for an experienced Hardware Build Team Leader to join our growing team to carry out assembly and manufacture of bespoke control systems and instrument racks in a fast-paced and consistently varying environment. You’ll be part of our dynamic team that is responsible for developing bespoke hardware and software solutions, specialising in data acquisition, automated control and systems integration for customers across a broad range of industries. THE ROLE A Hardware Build Team Leader is a dual-purpose role that combines hands-on technical expertise with supervisory management. You will be responsible for your own project builds and the day-to-day coordination of electrical and light mechanical build activities, both in our workshop and onsite during project installation and commissioning. Other responsibilities include ensuring projects are completed on time & budget, to high-quality standards, and in strict compliance with electrical and safety regulations, through the effective supervision of team members, equipment, materials and suppliers. JOB PURPOSE To build electrical and mechanical projects, while being the lead of the electrical technicians team, managing daily workloads and ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality hardware builds are delivered on time and budget. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Team Leadership: Act as the primary point of contact for electrical technicians, providing technical guidance, conducting performance reviews, and managing staff development through coaching, mentoring and training., • Operational Oversight: In conjunction with the Project Manager, plan and prioritise daily/weekly build schedules to achieve project deadlines and targets., • Workshop Management:, • Hands-on management of day-to-day activities in the workshop to ensure efficient and effective hardware builds,, • Manage & monitor workshop stock levels, and coordinate with purchasing for necessary parts, materials and tooling., • Overseeing the correct handling and booking in of materials, • Continually monitor and assess all department procedures and update as necessary., • Electro-Mechanical Assembly & Installation: Building sub-assemblies or complete systems to drawings and build procedures. The role will involve working both in-house at Sheffield Workshop and on-site at customer locations around the UK. Hardware build activities include: Panel layout and assembly. • Assembly of 19" rack systems., • Wiring harness and looms., • Wiring of control units and interface boxes., • Mechanical assembly, typically extruded aluminium frame assemblies and fixturing, requiring proficiency with basic machining, such as drilling, tapping, counter sinking, cutting, grinding, deburring etc, • Functional testing of works, including continuity and electrical test (PAT Testing, Earth Bonding), with pragmatic and efficient problem-solving skills., • On-site installations/pre-commissioning site fit out, including electrical installations (single and 3-phase), running and dressing cabling, which may include the use of height access equipment, and installing suitable containment, • Completing testing documentation, RAMS, site visit reports and maintaining accurate records of any modifications, deviations to design specifications., • Health & Safety: Responsible for the Health & Safety of all staff within the Engineering Workshop and on site, including completing RAMS documents and ensuring they are adhered to., • Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment, • Overseeing and managing the inspection and calibration of equipment and tools, • Technical Support: Maintain hands-on involvement in engineering tasks, such as complex diagnostics, repairs, or fabrication, while serving as an escalation point for technical blockers., • Hardware Design: Providing feedback and contributing to electrical and mechanical designs throughout the project lifecycle REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS • Experience: 5+ years of experience in an engineering workshop environment, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or mentoring capacity., • Education: A recognised mechanical engineering qualification such as an NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds in Electrical Installations or Electrical Maintenance or equivalent. Technical skills (required recent hands-on experience & ability to lead, train and assess others) • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and schematics., • Ability to interpret schematics and engineering drawings and make informed decisions on elements such as cable selection and effectively redline/update technical drawings., • Ability to lay out components on a back-plate to drawings and also in-line with previous builds or experience, including performing panel fabrication to a high standard, i.e. drill/cut/punch holes for cable entry, glands, connectors, indicators etc and other similar tasks., • IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition., • Practical electrical debug experience and can demonstrate a pragmatic approach to problem-solving., • Experience of on-site installations, ideally including pre-planning and quality control., • Experience with mainstream PLCs (Siemens, Beckhoff, etc) based control hardware or NI instrumentation., • Applicants should demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and other relevant legislation, regulations, and safe practices., • General Health & Safety knowledge (Manual Handling, Work at Height, Asbestos Awareness, • etc.), • Strong IT ability, including use of email and Microsoft Teams and completion of electronic site survey documents and ideally familiar with eView from EPlan. This may also include undertaking alternative jobs/duties within your existing or potential capabilities. This flexibility is essential for operational efficiency as the type and volume of work is always subject to change., • Excellent communication skills for leading, motivating & developing the build team, collaborating and liaising across internal departments, including senior management, and also external engagement with customers and suppliers., • Ability and confidence to represent the company professionally and communicate effectively with the customer when on site, providing timely updates and reassuring the customer when handling situations such as scope creep, or third-party impacts in a correct, professional and calm manner, in line with the company's core values., • Coaching & Mentorship: Training & guiding the hardware build team/electrical technicians, to develop build and problem-solving skills., • Must maintain a high quality of workmanship and have a desire for continuous improvement and a willingness to learn, • Strong time-management and organisation skills to ensure tasks are completed in line with the Schedule of Works. LOCATION: • Main working location will be Sheffield, where our main office and our workshop for hardware builds is located. There will also be regular travel to customer locations UK-wide, with potential trips outside the UK with advanced warning., • Flexibility to travel throughout the UK to customer sites, including at short notice, 50% of the time. OTHER: • Legal right to live and work in the UK. Valid passport for global travel., • Must hold a full, clean, valid UK driving licence and be insured to use own private vehicle for work travel.
