Job DescriptionDescriptionPosition Title: Detroit Early Middle College ELA TeacherFunding Source: General Fund Reports to: This position reports to and is evaluated by the School Principal Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred., • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with an ELA Endorsement qualifying the educator to teach high school English, such as:, • BA – English (6–12), or, • BX – Language Arts (6–12), • Previous high school teaching experience is strongly preferred., • Strong understanding of adolescent development, secondary ELA pedagogy, and effective instructional strategies., • Experience supporting college readiness, dual enrollment, or Early Middle College coursework is preferred., • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills., • Strong computer and technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and instructional technology tools., • Commitment to creating an inclusive, literacy-rich environment that promotes critical thinking and student voice., • Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational setting and contribute positively to school culture.Position Description: Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher to join our innovative instructional team. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering a positive, rigorous, and inclusive learning environment while supporting scholars’ development in reading, writing, speaking, and critical analysis. As a high school ELA teacher within an Early Middle College model, you will play a pivotal role in preparing students for college-level literacy expectations and long-term academic success. Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling. Terms of Employment: Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel. Key Responsibilities • Develop and implement engaging, rigorous ELA lesson plans aligned with Detroit Early Middle College curriculum, Michigan ELA Standards, and college readiness expectations., • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, and strong communication skills., • Tailor instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students enrolled in advanced coursework or Early Middle College pathways., • Regularly assess student learning using a variety of formative and summative assessments., • Provide timely, constructive feedback to support student growth in reading, writing, and analysis., • Communicate student progress with parents/guardians and maintain open, professional communication., • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and Early Middle College partners to support academic planning, literacy development, and college readiness., • Participate in the teaching and learning cycle by analyzing data, creating action plans, delivering re-teach lessons, and reflecting on instructional practices., • Support and implement specialized student plans, such as IEPs, 504 Plans, and behavior plans., • Engage in ongoing professional learning to deepen content knowledge, literacy instruction strategies, and understanding of Early Middle College expectations., • Contribute positively to school culture by supporting teamwork, accountability, and mutual respect., • Adhere to district and school policies, expectations, and professional protocols., • Strong knowledge of ELA content, pedagogy, and adolescent literacy development., • Ability to integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills into engaging, meaningful instruction., • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills., • Proficiency with technology tools for instruction and communication (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, LMS platforms)., • Commitment to creating equitable learning experiences for all students., • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic educational environment.
