The Food & Design Technology Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, innovative, and practical lessons across Food Technology and broader Design Technology curriculum areas. The role focuses on developing students practical skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of nutrition, food preparation, materials, and design principles. The teacher will inspire students to create high-quality products, follow safe working practices, and take pride in their learning. The role will also involve teaching across Design Technology classes and other areas including ART lessons. Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality lessons in Food and Design Technology in line with the national curriculum and school policies. Teach practical food preparation, nutrition, healthy eating, and design principles across KS3KS5 (depending on school requirements). Create engaging schemes of work and practical tasks that encourage creativity, independence, and technical skill development. Support students in developing skills in materials, tools, design processes, and evaluation techniques. Differentiate learning to meet the needs of all students, including SEND and EAL learners. Assess student progress regularly, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records. Practical & Technical Duties Manage and maintain the food technology room/workshop, ensuring all equipment and resources are safe, clean, and well-organised. Oversee purchasing of ingredients and materials while working within allocated budgets. Ensure safe use of tools, appliances, and machinery at all times, following school and national Health & Safety and food hygiene guidelines. Conduct risk assessments for practical activities and maintain a safe learning environment. Classroom Management & Pastoral Care Maintain high standards of behaviour and foster a positive, respectful classroom culture. Motivate and inspire students through positive reinforcement, praise, and encouragement. Provide pastoral support to learners and communicate effectively with parents/carers regarding student progress and behaviour where necessary. Professional Responsibilities Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, CPD, and whole-school activities. Collaborate with colleagues to share best practice and contribute to curriculum development. Support with extracurricular clubs such as cooking club, bake club, DT club, or competitions. Contribute to school events such as open evenings, exhibitions, and showcases of student work. Key Skills & Attributes Strong subject knowledge in Food Technology, Nutrition, and/or broader Design Technology disciplines. Excellent practical skills and confidence using a range of tools, equipment, and kitchen appliances. Creativity in planning engaging and meaningful practical lessons. Excellent classroom management, communication, and organisational skills. Passionate about inspiring young people and developing their technical and creative abilities. Strong awareness of food hygiene, allergy management, and Health & Safety practices. Ability to work collaboratively within a team and contribute positively to the department. Qualifications & Experience Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS (or working towards). Degree in Food Technology, Design Technology, Nutrition, or a related field (preferred).
