Job DescriptionDescription: THE BROAD The Broad’s mission is to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Founded in 2015 on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active Program of special exhibitions and innovative live events, all within a landmark building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Welcoming around 900,000 visitors per year, The Broad is a bustling public space and serves as home to the Broad collection, one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art, which continues to grow as new artists and artworks are added. The museum is also the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has been loaning collection works to museums around the world since 1984. An expansion of the museum will open before the 2028 summer Olympics in Los Angeles, creating even greater public access. ABOUT THE POSITION The Broad seeks a strategic, collaborative, and energetic leader to be its inaugural Director of Exhibitions Management (DEM). Reporting to the Founding Director and the COO, and partnering with curatorial and collections staff, the DEM will lead the planning, production, and implementation of a dynamic and ambitious program of exhibitions and collection installations across the institution. This role will be key to the success of a new chapter at The Broad, which will open its expansion building, currently under construction, in 2028. Adding 70% more gallery space to the museum, The Broad expansion creates opportunities for robust and adventurous special exhibitions and installations as well as more extensive displays of its growing collection, in service of The Broad’s mission to create access to contemporary art for the widest possible audience. The DEM will create comprehensive long-term exhibition and collection installation strategies aligned with the organization's mission and priorities. With thorough attention to detail, the DEM will oversee the implementation of those plans, optimizing curatorial achievement and operational resources in concert with attendance and revenue goals. This leadership role will oversee the planning and production of special exhibitions and the day-to-day art related operations of galleries. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Set institutional exhibition standards, policies, and long-term planning frameworks., • Manage institutional and external peer colleague relationships to expand exhibition reach and generate revenue from touring and other partner opportunities., • Identify potential exhibition projects for Founding Director/curatorial team consideration and promote The Broad’s projects to peer institutions and potential partners., • Oversee the business and operational planning for traveling exhibitions and permanent collection rotations, as well as occasional special initiatives such as site-specific commissions, which will include:, • Developing financial modeling, fee structures, and budget and sustainability forecasts., • Crafting business models that support cost recovery and revenue growth, including assisting in revenue projections for ticket sales, tours, and sponsorship., • Negotiating touring exhibition contracts with borrowing institutions and aligning touring strategies with broader institutional goals., • Forecasting, planning, and managing the deployment of staff and operational resources., • Oversee all aspects of exhibition planning, production and implementation across the institution:, • Assist in conceptual planning including suggesting exhibitions and themes that fit into the museum’s mission and audience goals., • Assist with spatial and design planning including gallery layout, visitor flow, sightlines, and accessibility., • Oversee exhibition casework, lighting, wayfinding, and installation of interpretive graphics., • Lead exhibition-related digital/AV media, immersive elements, and technology installation., • Lead and manage project teams of internal and external exhibition staff and contractors including exhibition registrars, exhibition designers, technicians, installers, and maintenance personnel., • Oversee exhibition timelines and project schedules, ensuring cross-team coordination and the on-time execution of multiple concurrent projects., • Ensure cross-team collaboration and proactively coordinate with Collections Management, Facilities, Security, Marketing, and Visitor Experience teams to support seamless integration of exhibition planning and execution., • Ensure legal, contractual, and compliance issues are managed in all aspects of exhibitions., • Partner with Collections Management on proper exhibition- and collection-object data management., • Lead project planning for new exhibition spaces, exhibition design, or major renovations., • Oversee incoming artwork loans for exhibitions, including negotiating loan contracts, budgeting for art crafting/shipping/couriers/security/insurance., • Assign tasks and ensure efficient workflows in all logistical aspects of art handling, shipping, installation, and documentation, in collaboration with Collections Management., • Support, mentor, and help develop the Exhibitions team, including exhibitions registrars, as well as preparators working specifically on exhibition-related installations and traveling exhibitions., • Ensure the smooth running of exhibition spaces, including gallery maintenance, environmental controls, accessibility compliance, and visitor flow management., • Guide team members in relevant documentation of exhibitions, loans, and other data., • Prioritize accessibility and multilingual access to exhibitions and collection displays and foster a culture where this work is built into exhibition design., • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture. The ideal candidate brings deep experience with art and museums, including exceptional skills in communication, registration, and project management, and deep technical knowledge about the safe care of contemporary artworks. Candidates who thrive in collaborative environments, and who seek out and embrace fresh approaches that increase effectiveness or efficiency are highly desirable. • 7-10 years of progressive experience in Exhibitions at a museum that presents international and complex exhibitions, preferably focused on contemporary art, and 5 years in a leadership role., • Extensive knowledge of contemporary art practices, museum standards, and exhibition production., • Demonstrated experience reading, interpreting, and negotiating contracts related to exhibitions, artwork loans, or institutional partnerships., • Proven record managing complex exhibition schedules and engaging stakeholders across teams., • Proven ability to develop and manage teams, budgets, and timelines effectively., • Experience with overall exhibition budgets including revenue, and demonstrated strong budget management and negotiation skills., • Ability to create effective processes that facilitate collaboration and foster information-sharing across museum teams., • Support and demonstrate the museum’s culture of developing a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment for staff, contract staff, vendors, and visitors., • Approach work with integrity and honesty., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, 3d Modeling and collections management systems., • Knowledge of Embark, relational databases, and SQL preferred., • All employees of The Broad are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law.
