Position Summary The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key role on the multidisciplinary care team, supporting integrated physical and behavioral health services within a community behavioral health setting. This position provides direct patient care support, administrative functions, and coordination with clinicians to ensure safe, trauma-informed, person-centered care for individuals with mental health and substance use needs. Key Responsibilities Clinical Support • Perform routine clinical tasks, including vital signs, height/weight, BMI, and point-of-care testing., • Assist providers with medical and psychiatric assessments, exams, and procedures., • Conduct health screenings (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7, SBIRT, social determinants of health)., • Administer immunizations and medications per organizational policy and state regulations., • Prepare exam rooms, maintain equipment, and ensure infection control standards., • Update patient charts with accurate, timely clinical documentation within the EHR., • Conduct pre-visit screening and collection of pre-visit information, • Collecting lab specimens and obtaining vital signs (after training), • Conduct follow-up communication with patients to reinforce care plans and address barriers to care Care Coordination • Support integrated care workflows between primary care and behavioral health teams., • Assist with referrals, authorizations, follow-up appointments, and lab/imaging coordination., • Track preventive care needs and outreach for missed appointments or care gaps., • Provide patient education on medication adherence, chronic conditions, wellness, and self-management. Administrative Duties • Manage front- and back-office operations as needed, including check-in, scheduling, and insurance verification., • Process incoming calls/messages and route appropriately within the care team., • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure regulatory compliance., • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to team meetings., • Maintain accurate data in EHR to support compliance, audits, and reporting. Behavioral Health-Specific Functions • Support crisis prevention protocols (without performing clinical crisis intervention beyond scope)., • Provide trauma-informed interactions with individuals experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms., • Monitor patients during psychiatric injections or medication-assisted treatment appointments., • Assist nursing and psychiatric providers with medication administration workflows. Qualifications • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required., • Current MA certification/registration (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or state equivalent) preferred., • CPR/BLS certification., • Experience:, • Experience working with diverse populations and sensitivity to behavioral health conditions, • Prior experience in community health, behavioral health, or integrated care settings., • Familiarity with trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and harm-reduction principles., • Experience with electronic health records (EHR), preferably in an outpatient or community clinic environment., • Strong communication skills and ability to build rapport with patients experiencing mental health or substance use challenges., • Compassion, patience, and emotional resilience in high-stress situations., • Ability to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams (medical, nursing, behavioral health, case management)., • Organizational skills and attention to detail in fast-paced environments., • Commitment to cultural humility, equity, and reducing stigma in behavioral health care., • Awareness of crisis safety protocols, • Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, credentialing, immunization tracking)., • Language Skills: Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
