Our Opportunity We have an exciting opportunity for a Hardware Engineering Manager to join a growing technology organisation based in the Birmingham area , a hub of advanced engineering and innovation. This pivotal role involves leading a skilled hardware team in the design, development, and delivery of complex electronic systems , ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and EMC standards (including RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and relevant safety directives). Youll be accountable for cost, schedule, performance, and quality commitments, driving engineering excellence throughout the full hardware product lifecycle from concept through to verification and production support. Collaborating closely with systems, software, and mechanical engineers, youll ensure all hardware designs align with business and customer requirements. Your leadership will empower a high-performing electronics team delivering cutting-edge solutions across a variety of challenging projects. The Hardware Engineering Manager operates within the framework set by Engineering Delivery Managers, Solution Architects, and Design Authorities to ensure consistency, compliance, and quality across all programmes. Key Responsibilities of the Role Hardware Development Cycle: Define, plan, and manage the hardware development process to meet project requirements. Ensure adherence to company processes and engineering best practices. Engineering Environment: Tailor the hardware engineering environment processes, tools, and standards to meet both company and project-specific needs. Task Allocation & Leadership: Lead, mentor, and motivate a multidisciplinary hardware engineering team. Plan, prioritise, and allocate work effectively, balancing multiple project demands. Architecture Definition & Specification: Contribute to system architecture development, hardware function allocation, and interface definition. Create electronics specifications, architectures, and verification plans. Work Package & Bid Management: Occasionally act as Work Package Manager, preparing estimates, supporting bid activity, and offering consultancy on electronic solutions. Technical Direction: Provide technical oversight, ensuring design risks are managed and issues resolved. Lead investigations, root cause analysis, and improvement initiatives. Collaboration: Work closely with systems, software, and mechanical teams to develop optimal integrated solutions. Team Development: Mentor junior engineers, review peer work, and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the electronics function. Conduct effective development discussions to enhance technical growth and career progression. Essential Qualifications and Skills Bachelors or Masters degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent). Proven track record in hardware design and engineering management within complex product environments. Strong understanding of the hardware development lifecycle , from requirements through to validation. Skilled in leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver against technical, cost, and schedule targets. Expertise in electronics circuit design using schematic capture tools (e.g. Cadence, Mentor Graphics/ Siemens, Altium). Familiarity with full product lifecycle activities, from concept and bid to integration and qualification. Confident communicator with strong leadership, planning, and influencing abilities. Experience promoting innovation and implementing new tools, methods, or technologies within hardware engineering teams. Strong background in technical documentation, process compliance, and cross-functional collaboration. Desirable Attributes Product knowledge in lasers, cameras, or optoelectronics . Passion for continuous learning and staying abreast of electronics advancements. Understanding of ISO9001-compliant engineering processes or equivalent frameworks (e.g. Chorus 2.0). Level 6 qualification (BEng (Hons) Electronics or equivalent). Experience working within Birminghams thriving technology, defence, or manufacturing sectors is advantageous. Why Join Us?
