Job Description Summary Wayland is an independent, coed college preparatory school for boarding and day students (grades 9-post-graduate), founded in 1855. The school’s rich, rigorous academic program features exceptionally small classes, capstone projects at every grade, an active STEAM program, and an array of AP offerings. The diverse and welcoming school community brings together students from across the United States and more than 25 other countries in an intimate learning environment, with a student-faculty ratio of 7:1. Wayland’s historic campus is located in the heart of the Midwest in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin—just 40 miles from Madison and 60 miles from Milwaukee. Essential Functions The Athletic Director is a member of the Administrative Leadership Team and reports to the Head of School. The Director is an active, engaged member of the daily life of the Academy, and is responsible for the entire athletic program. The Director will lead the program to collaboratively create and inspire a vision for athletics at Wayland. The priorities for the program are to support the mission of the school, to drive enrollment, and to engage alumni with the Academy. Responsibilities essential to this function include: • Provide hands-on leadership, administrative direction, and oversight for all aspects of the athletic program., • Develop and coordinate co-curricular and educational athletic programs that attract, engage, and encourage student participation while ensuring student skill development., • Serve as a model coach displaying leadership by sustaining a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect among student-athletes and coaches at all levels. Effectively develop, support, and supervise coaches and athletic staff., • Collaborate with Admissions, College Counseling and the Academic Office to advance the Wayland Academy mission and strategic initiatives., • Coordinate contests with other schools/teams for all athletics including scheduling, contracting officials, contracting transportation, planning and supervising home events, and preparing fields or indoor competition spaces., • Maintain the athletic contest, practice and bus/van use calendars., • Assume responsibility for athletic spaces including creating a safe environment., • Update, implement and administer the coaching handbook and the student handbook including, but not limited to, codes of conduct, eligibility, and participation rules in alignment with WIAA, NFHS and Wayland Academy rules, policies and guidelines., • Prepare an accurate budget in cooperation with the Business Office, administering departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner. Purchase and maintain equipment, supplies and uniforms., • May participate in revenue development planning and fundraising. The Athletic Director is the primary supervisor for all coaching and athletic staff including the Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Medicine Specialist. The Director will coordinate supervision, evaluation, scheduling and discipline for faculty and staff who have more than one supervisor. The Director routinely supervises students in the dormitories, dining hall and other campus community related activities. The Director serves as Administrator on Duty approximately one weekend per month. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus., • Traveling with and for students for academic, extracurricular, and residential life functions is a regular duty of the Director., • Overnight out-of-state or foreign travel for school-related business may be assigned., • Bachelor’s degree, • Experience coaching at the secondary school level, • Master's Degree or other advanced degree, • Experience participating in or coaching athletics at the college level, • Employee must be authorized to work in the United States of America.
